How to descale a Ninja Luxe Café step by step
How to descale a Ninja Luxe Café from Ninja's UK instructions, for the Premier (ES601UK) and Pro (ES701UK): the DESCALE light, the powder or Ninja's vinegar option, the 90-minute cycle and the flush.

If you’re wondering how to descale a Ninja Luxe Café, the good news is that most of the work happens on its own. Once you’ve set it up, the machine runs for about 90 minutes and counts down on the control panel. The bad news is that it takes a while, so it’s best to start it when you won’t need coffee for a couple of hours. We haven’t tested this in person. The steps below come from Ninja’s UK owner’s guide for the Luxe Café Premier Series (ES600 series, including the ES601UK) and SharkNinja UK’s descaling page for the Pro Series (ES701UK), both read on 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.
Short answer: how to descale a Ninja Luxe Café
When the DESCALE light comes on, empty the main drip tray. Dissolve one packet of Ninja descale powder in 1.1 litres of water and pour it into the reservoir. Fit the double basket and portafilter, put the milk jug on its platform with the steam wand inside, and stand a cup of at least 530 ml under the portafilter. Press DESCALE, then the centre dial. After about 90 minutes, wash the parts, refill with fresh water, run a CLASSIC brew at M+ size and press PURGE.
Who it isn’t for: owners of other Ninja models, such as the Luxe Café Mini or the Ninja Autobarista. Check the guide for your model.
When the Luxe Café needs descaling
The DESCALE button lights up to tell you it’s time. Ninja says that if you don’t descale once the light is on, drink quality will drop and the machine may clog and stop working.
How soon the light comes on depends on the water hardness setting, so set it when you first use the machine:
- Submerge the test strip in the water you plan to use for 5 to 10 seconds, then pull it out and shake it lightly.
- Count the purple squares.
- Plug in the machine. The left side of the control panel shows “hd 5”.
- Turn the centre dial to match your result (for example, hd 1 for level 1), then press the dial to confirm.
If you need to set it again later, Ninja says to buy another test strip from its parts and accessories pages.
What you need
- Ninja descale powder. One packet comes in the box. SharkNinja UK says the powder gives the best results.
- Or white vinegar, as Ninja’s own alternative. Ninja’s instructions list it as an option: 473 ml of white vinegar in the reservoir (the Premier guide says 474 ml), then top up with water to the Descale line. That’s the maker’s guidance for this machine, not a general rule for other brands.
- A cup or jug that holds at least 530 ml, to go under the portafilter. The Premier guide says 533 ml.
- About 90 minutes.
We couldn’t find a current UK retailer price for Ninja’s descale powder on 3 Oct 2026. Currys didn’t list it, and Ninja’s own shop didn’t return a price to our check.
How to descale a Ninja Luxe Café: step by step
- Empty the main drip tray. Some of the descaling water ends up there, and Ninja warns it may overflow if you skip this.
- Add the solution. Dissolve the Ninja descale powder in 1.1 litres of water in a separate container, then pour it into the reservoir. If you’re using Ninja’s vinegar option, pour in 473 ml of white vinegar and fill to the Descale line with water.
- Fit the double basket. Put it in the portafilter.
- Fit the portafilter. Fasten it into the group head.
- Position the milk jug. Place it on the milk jug platform with the steam wand inside.
- Place a cup. Stand an empty cup of at least 530 ml under the portafilter. You may need to remove the centre drip tray to make room.
- Start the cycle. Press the DESCALE button, then press the centre dial.
- Wait. The machine flushes the solution through the steam wand and portafilter for about 90 minutes and shows the remaining time on the control panel. It beeps when it’s done.
- Wash the parts. Carefully remove the portafilter, main drip tray and milk jug, because they’ll all have water in them. Empty them and hand-wash in warm, soapy water so no solution affects the taste of your coffee.
- Refill. Fill the reservoir with fresh water, up to but not over the Max Fill line.
- Refit, without the jug. Put the main drip tray and portafilter back. Leave the milk jug off.
- Flush the group head. Run a CLASSIC brew at M+ size.
- Flush the steam wand. With the milk jug still off, press PURGE.
Premier vs Pro: what’s different?
The descaling steps are the same on both. The only differences we found were small: the Premier guide gives 474 ml of vinegar and a 533 ml cup, while SharkNinja’s Pro page says 473 ml and 530 ml. The Pro page also doesn’t repeat the step of refilling with fresh water before the flush, but you’ll need water in the reservoir to run the CLASSIC brew.
If it gets stuck mid-cycle
Ninja’s guide doesn’t describe what to do if the cycle is interrupted. If the descale doesn’t finish, or the DESCALE light stays on, contact Ninja UK support. Its number is printed in the owner’s guide.
The CLEAN light is separate. It means the group head needs a clean cycle with the cleaning disc and a tablet, which takes about 6 minutes.
How to descale less often
- Set the water hardness correctly so the light comes on at the right time.
- Use the water filter. Soak it for 5 minutes, rinse the filter and mesh for 60 seconds, then set the date dial 2 months ahead and fit it in the reservoir.
- Use cold or room-temperature water. Ninja says hot water can trigger an ADD WATER message.
Downsides
- About 90 minutes is a long cycle.
- We couldn’t confirm a UK retailer price for refill descale powder.
