How to descale a Sage Barista Express: BES875 step by step, plus Impress notes

Sage Barista Express descaling step by step from Sage's BES875 manual: how often, the button sequence, the coffee, steam and hot water stages, the rinse, and Impress differences.

If you want to know how to descale Sage Barista Express machines, the process has a few more steps than a pod machine. You enter descale mode with a button combination, then descale the coffee, steam and hot water parts one at a time, repeating until the tank is empty, before rinsing with fresh water. We haven’t tested this in person. The steps below are based on Sage’s BES875 Barista Express manual, with notes from the BES876 Barista Express Impress manual, checked 3 Oct 2026. Always follow the manual for your model. Read how we compare.

How often to descale

Sage’s BES875 manual recommends descaling every 90 days if your water hardness is level 4, and every 60 days at level 6. It explains that hard water can build up minerals inside the machine, reducing brewing flow, temperature, power and the taste of your espresso.

What you need

  • Sage descaling powder. The manual uses one Sage descaling sachet dissolved in one litre of hot tap water. We couldn’t check Sage’s own price on 3 Oct 2026, so check current price on the Sage UK site.
  • A large container to go under the group head and the steam wand.
  • Fresh cold water for the rinse. The tank holds 2 litres.

Who it isn’t for: anyone mixing this up with the cleaning cycle. Sage’s cleaning cycle uses a cleaning tablet in the portafilter and is a separate job.

How to descale Sage Barista Express BES875: step by step

Prime the machine

  1. Make the solution. Dissolve one Sage descaling sachet in one litre of hot tap water and pour it into the water tank.
  2. Enter descale mode. Press and hold the 2 CUP button, then press and hold the POWER button at the same time.
  3. Wait for it to heat. The POWER button flashes while the machine heats up. It’s ready when the POWER button, 1 CUP button, CLEAN ME light and HOT WATER/STEAM light are all lit solidly.

Descale the coffee, steam and hot water parts

  1. Coffee. Press the 1 CUP button. This takes about 25 seconds. The 1 CUP button flashes, then stays on when finished.
  2. Steam. Turn the steam dial LEFT towards the STEAM icon. This takes about 13 seconds.
  3. Hot water. Turn the steam dial RIGHT towards the HOT WATER icon. This takes about 8 seconds.
  4. Repeat. Sage says about half a litre of solution should be left after one round, so repeat steps 4 to 6 until the tank is empty.

Rinse

  1. Refill. Remove the tank, rinse it thoroughly and refill it with fresh cold water to the maximum (2 litres).
  2. Rinse through. Repeat steps 4 to 6 to flush out any remaining solution.
  3. Exit. Press POWER to quit descale mode. The lights switch off.

Sage’s manual warns that the water tank should never be removed or completely emptied during descaling. It also says the machine turns itself off if there’s no action for 5 minutes in descale mode. To carry on, start again from step 4. You can stop the steam or hot water stage early by turning the dial back to STANDBY.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants a one-button process. Expect to stand by the machine and turn the dial yourself.

Barista Express Impress (BES876): what’s different

The Impress follows a similar pattern, but its manual has a few differences:

  • Remove the water filter before you start.
  • Start with the machine switched off, then hold 2 CUP and POWER together for 5 seconds.
  • The dial directions are reversed: on the Impress, steam is to the RIGHT and hot water is to the LEFT.
  • Lights: a solid CLEAN/DESCALE light means descaling is due. A flashing one means it’s time for a cleaning cycle instead.
  • Water: the manual says not to use bottled water.
  • Auto-off: like the BES875, it turns off after 5 minutes without action.

Our Sage Barista Express Impress review covers the machine in more detail.

The cleaning cycle (a different job)

Descaling removes limescale. The cleaning cycle cleans coffee oils from the group head:

  • BES875: put the 1 CUP basket, the cleaning disc and a cleaning tablet in the portafilter, lock it in, then with the machine off, hold 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER together for about 10 seconds. It runs for about 5 minutes.
  • BES876 Impress: the manual uses a 3-second hold for the cleaning cycle.

Sage also recommends changing the water filter every 3 months. Keeping the grinder clean helps too. See how to clean a coffee grinder.
