The best espresso machines under £500 in the UK

Six espresso machines under £500 with UK prices checked on 3 Oct 2026: three that need a separate grinder, three with one built in, and how to split your budget.

The best espresso machine under £500 UK shoppers can buy depends on one decision. This is the budget where you have to choose whether to buy a machine with a grinder built in, or a better machine plus a separate grinder. We found six machines under £500 with prices we could confirm on 3 Oct 2026: three without a grinder (two from Sage and the Gaggia Classic E24) and three with one built in. We haven’t tested this in person. Our picks are based on Sage UK’s, Gaggia UK’s and Currys’ published specs and listings and UK prices checked 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.

Best espresso machine under £500 UK: the short answer

Get the Sage Bambino if you want a compact, quick machine and plan to buy a grinder separately. It’s £329.95 at Sage UK (checked 3 Oct 2026), leaving about £170 of a £500 budget for a grinder.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants milk frothed for them. The Bambino’s steam wand is manual.

Get the Sage Bambino Plus if you want the same compact machine with automatic milk. It’s £399.95 at Sage UK and £399.99 at Currys (both checked 3 Oct 2026).

Who it isn’t for: anyone on a strict £500 total. It leaves about £100 for a grinder.

Choose the De’Longhi La Specialista Arte if you want an all-in-one with a grinder for the least money. It’s £385.00 at Currys (checked 3 Oct 2026).

Who it isn’t for: anyone short on worktop space. Currys lists it at 40cm high and 36.5cm deep.

Skip all of these if you don’t want to learn to tamp and steam. A bean-to-cup machine does it for you; see our guide to bean-to-cup machines under £500.

Machines without a grinder

Sage Bambino BES450

Sage UK lists a 1.4-litre tank, a 54mm portafilter with both single-wall and dual-wall filters, and four buttons: one cup, two cups, hot water and steam. Sage says its ThermoJet heating is ready in 3 seconds; that’s the maker’s claim, not something we’ve measured. Our Sage Bambino review goes into more detail.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants automatic milk or a big tank. That’s what the Bambino Plus adds.

Sage Bambino Plus BES500

The Plus keeps the 54mm portafilter and adds an automatic steam wand that, Sage says, textures milk for you. Sage UK lists a 1.9-litre tank, and the box includes a 480ml stainless steel milk jug, a tamper and Sage’s Razor dosing tool. Sage gives the size as 19.4cm wide, 36.2cm deep and 30.4cm high, so it’s slim. Our Bambino vs Bambino Plus comparison covers the choice between the two.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who enjoys learning to steam milk by hand. You’ll be paying £70 more at Sage UK (checked 3 Oct 2026) for automation you don’t want.

Machines with a built-in grinder

De’Longhi La Specialista Arte EC9155.MB

Currys lists a built-in grinder with 15 settings, a 200g bean container, a 1.7-litre tank and a steam wand De’Longhi calls MyLatte Art. There are three preset recipes (espresso, americano and hot water), and the box includes single-wall baskets, a stainless steel milk jug, a metal tamper and a tamping mat.

Who it isn’t for: anyone short on space. Currys lists it at 40cm high, 27.5cm wide and 36.5cm deep.

Breville Barista Max VCF126

The Barista Max has the biggest tank here by far: Currys lists 2.8 litres. It also lists a built-in grinder with a 250g bean hopper, a 58mm portafilter, dual-walled filter baskets, a tamper and a 450ml stainless steel milk jug.

Who it isn’t for: anyone wanting to fine-tune shots with single-wall baskets. Currys’ box list only mentions dual-walled ones, and at 34.7cm wide it takes up the most worktop.

De’Longhi La Specialista Arte Evo EC9255.MB

At £499.00 at Currys (checked 3 Oct 2026), the Arte Evo uses almost the whole budget. Over the Arte, Currys lists a cold brew function and a bigger 250g bean hopper, but a smaller 1.5-litre tank. The box includes a dosing funnel, a tamper, a tamping mat, a milk jug and a cup raiser.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who won’t use cold brew. For most people, the Arte is the better value at £114 less (Currys, checked 3 Oct 2026).

How to split a £500 budget

If you buy a machine without a grinder, you’ll need one that can grind fine enough for espresso. With the Bambino at £329.95 (Sage UK, checked 3 Oct 2026), you’d have about £170 left. With the Bambino Plus at £399.95 (Sage UK, checked 3 Oct 2026), you’d have about £100. The grey Gaggia Classic E24 at £499.00 (Gaggia UK, checked 3 Oct 2026) leaves almost nothing, so it only makes sense if you already own a grinder. Our guide to the best burr grinders under £100 explains which grinders at that price can really manage espresso, and which are built for filter coffee.

A built-in grinder is simpler and takes up one space rather than two. The trade-off is that you can’t upgrade the grinder later without replacing the whole machine.

Who it isn’t for: if you only use pre-ground coffee, skip the grinder machines entirely and save the money.

Also under £500: the Gaggia Classic E24

Gaggia UK’s Classic range page lists three current machines, the Classic E24, Classic Up and Classic GT, and no model called the Classic Pro (checked 3 Oct 2026). The grey E24, RI9481/16E, is £499.00 at Gaggia UK’s online store, in stock, checked 3 Oct 2026, so it fits a £500 budget. The stainless steel version, RI9481/11E, costs more: £549.00 at Gaggia UK, in stock, checked 3 Oct 2026.

Gaggia UK lists a 2.1-litre tank, a brass boiler, a 15-bar pump, a three-way solenoid valve, a steam wand with two outlets and a five-year parts warranty for home use. It takes ground coffee or ESE pods and comes with three baskets: a “perfect crema” basket plus single (7g) and double (16g) traditional baskets. Gaggia UK gives the size as 23cm wide, 38cm high and 24cm deep, and the power as 1300W. It has no grinder.

Who it isn’t for: anyone with a firm £500 limit for machine and grinder together, since the grey E24 uses £499.00 of it, or anyone set on the stainless finish, which is £549.00 at Gaggia UK (checked 3 Oct 2026).

Downsides of every machine here

  • Learning curve. All six need you to dose, tamp and steam (or at least pour) milk yourself.
  • Space. The grinder machines are tall and deep; measure under your cupboards.
  • Cleaning. Portafilters, steam wands and grinders all need regular cleaning.
