The best matcha whisk sets in the UK: chasen, bowl and scoop
What goes in a matcha whisk set, bamboo vs electric whisks, and the UK sets and single tools worth buying, with prices checked at UK tea shops on 3 Oct 2026.

If you’re looking for the best matcha whisk set in the UK, the first thing to know is that “set” means different things in different shops. Some kits come with matcha, a bamboo whisk and a spoon but no bowl. Others include a bowl too, and some shops only sell the pieces separately. Below, we explain what each piece does, then compare the sets and single tools sold at UK tea shops today.
We haven’t tested this in person. Our comparison is based on what the retailers list, and every price was checked on 3 October 2026.
What’s in a matcha whisk set?
A traditional set has three or four pieces, and each has a Japanese name you’ll see on product pages:
- Chasen (bamboo whisk): the tool that matters most. Jeeves & Jericho describes its chasen as made from a single piece of bamboo, and Whittard says its fine tines are shaped to whisk matcha evenly through water.
- Chawan (matcha bowl): a wide bowl gives the whisk room to move. Bird & Blend notes that a wider bowl helps when you use a bamboo whisk, but a mug works too.
- Chashaku (bamboo scoop): a curved spoon for measuring powder. Bird & Blend’s Perfect Matcha Spoon measures half a teaspoon, the amount it uses for one drink.
- Whisk holder (chasen tate): a ceramic stand that holds the whisk’s shape while it dries. It’s optional, but Bird & Blend says it helps prevent broken tines and mould.
A sieve is useful too, for breaking up lumps before you add water.
Bamboo whisk vs electric whisk
- Bamboo chasen: the traditional choice. Bird & Blend says it gives a thick foam, but it takes a little technique (see below) and needs rinsing and drying after every use.
- Handheld battery frother: quicker and easier for lattes and iced drinks. Bird & Blend sells an Aerolatte handheld frother for £20.00 at Bird & Blend, checked 3 Oct 2026, and says it can froth milk as well as matcha. If you already own one for coffee, it’ll do the job. Our handheld milk frother guide compares more.
- Electric matcha machine: Bird & Blend’s Matcha Latte Magic Whisk, made with Dualit, mixes matcha and froths milk at the press of a button. It’s £99.00 at Bird & Blend, checked 3 Oct 2026. That’s a lot for one drink, so it’s only worth it if you have matcha lattes every day. Our best milk frother guide covers jugs that do milk for coffee too.
If you mostly drink matcha lattes, a handheld frother does most of what a bamboo whisk does. If you want traditional, frothy matcha made with water, choose the chasen.

Just the whisk
If you already have a bowl and a teaspoon, a bamboo whisk on its own is £15.00 at Bird & Blend, Whittard and Jeeves & Jericho, all checked 3 Oct 2026. Bird & Blend’s ceramic Matcha Whisk Holder is £10.00 at Bird & Blend, checked 3 Oct 2026.
How to use a matcha whisk
Bird & Blend’s five-step method is a good place to start:
- Measure: half a teaspoon of matcha into a bowl. Bird & Blend says using too much is a common reason matcha tastes bitter.
- Add water at about 80°C, not boiling: just a splash, to make a paste. No temperature-control kettle? Bird & Blend suggests putting a little cold water in first, then adding just-boiled water. Our kettle guide covers models with temperature settings.
- Whisk in a W or M shape, not in circles: for about 20–30 seconds, until the paste is smooth and frothy with no dry powder at the sides.
- Top up: with hot water for traditional matcha, hot frothed milk for a latte, or ice for an iced drink.
- Sweeten now if you like it sweet: while the drink is still warm, so the sweetener dissolves.
How to look after a bamboo whisk
- Rinse it straight after use and let it air dry. That’s Bird & Blend’s advice.
- Hand wash only. Whittard’s care instructions for its whisk say exactly that.
- Dry it on a holder if you can. Bird & Blend says this keeps the tines curved and helps prevent breakage and mould.
The tines are thin, so a bamboo whisk won’t last forever. Replacing just the whisk (around £15) is cheaper than buying a whole new set.

FAQs
Do you need a bamboo whisk for matcha?
No. A handheld battery frother mixes matcha well, especially for lattes. A bamboo chasen is the traditional tool, and Bird & Blend says it gives a thicker foam.
What’s the difference between a chasen and a chashaku?
The chasen is the bamboo whisk. The chashaku is the curved bamboo scoop used to measure the powder.
Can you use a matcha whisk set for hojicha?
Yes. Hojicha powder is whisked the same way, and Bird & Blend’s Deluxe Traditional Whisking Gift Set offers hojicha as one of the powder choices.
Is a matcha whisk set a good gift?
It’s one of the easier tea gifts to buy, because it’s useful from day one. Choose a set that includes matcha, like Whittard’s or Bird & Blend’s, so they can start straight away.
