The best rooibos (redbush) tea in UK supermarkets

Clipper, Tick Tock, Tetley, own-label packs and a few loose-leaf options compared on what's in the box and what they cost, with UK prices checked 3 Oct 2026.

If you’re after the best rooibos tea in the UK, the good news is that you don’t have to look hard. Every big supermarket stocks at least one redbush box, and the main brands cost only a little more than own-label. The differences come down to price per bag, whether it’s organic, how the bags are made and whether you want a plain brew or a flavoured one.

We’ve compared the main options on what the brands and retailers publish and what they cost today. We haven’t tested this in person. We haven’t ranked them on taste. Every price below was checked on 3 October 2026 and may have changed since.

What rooibos actually is

Rooibos (Afrikaans for “red bush”) is made from a South African plant, not from the tea plant that gives us black and green tea. That’s why you’ll see it sold as an “infusion” rather than a tea, and why the same drink appears as rooibos on one box and redbush on the next. Tick Tock says its rooibos comes from the Cederberg, the mountain region north of Cape Town.

Whittard explains that most rooibos is left to oxidise in the sun, which gives the leaves their red-brown colour and the brew its slightly sweet, rounded taste. Whittard also sells a green rooibos that skips that step and tastes lighter.

On caffeine, NHS patient advice from University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust says redbush tea has no caffeine. Clipper also describes its rooibos as naturally caffeine-free. We make no other claims about rooibos and your health. If you have a medical reason to watch what you drink, ask your GP or pharmacist.

The best rooibos tea in the UK: our picks

Tick Tock Original Rooibos: the one most supermarkets stock

  • Price: £3.90 for 80 bags at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026. Also £3.90 at Sainsbury’s, checked 3 Oct 2026.
  • What’s in the box: 80 bags (180g).
  • What the brand says: brew for two to four minutes, with or without milk. Tick Tock says its bags are plant-based and free from polypropylene plastic, and can go in your council food waste bin.

Tick Tock is the obvious place to start: it’s a rooibos specialist, it’s widely stocked, and both supermarkets we could check had it at the same shelf price. Sainsbury’s also had Tick Tock Earl Grey Rooibos and Rooibos Vanilla in 40-bag boxes at £2.25 each, checked 3 Oct 2026, if you’d like a flavoured version.

Clipper Organic Rooibos: the organic pick

  • Price: £5.39 for 80 bags at the Clipper online shop, checked 3 Oct 2026.
  • What’s in the box: 80 bags of organically grown redbush, the only ingredient listed.
  • What the brand says: infuse for three to five minutes in water that’s just boiled, and drink it with or without milk. Clipper describes the taste as having a “subtle caramel character”.

This is the one to choose if you want organic. Clipper’s bags are unbleached and sealed with plant-based PLA rather than oil-based polypropylene; our page on whether Clipper tea bags are plastic-free explains what that means. We couldn’t find Clipper Rooibos in the Morrisons or Sainsbury’s online searches today, so we’ve priced it at Clipper’s own shop.

Tetley Redbush: the big-brand budget box

  • Price: £2.00 for 40 bags at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026.
  • What’s in the box: 40 bags (100g).

Tetley’s version works out at 5p a bag at Morrisons. That’s more per bag than own-label but a cheap way to try rooibos from a name you know. Sainsbury’s listed it too, but showed no price when we checked, so we’ve left that out.

Morrisons and Sainsbury’s own-label: the cheapest per bag

  • Morrisons Rooibos: £2.95 for 80 bags at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026.
  • Sainsbury’s Rooibos: £3.05 for 80 bags (200g) at Sainsbury’s, checked 3 Oct 2026.

At under 4p a bag, own-label is the cheapest way to drink rooibos every day. The labels don’t say much about where the rooibos comes from or how the bags are made, so if either matters to you, read the box before you buy.

Bird & Blend Rooibos Breakfast Cuppa: for builder’s-tea drinkers

  • Price: £3.50 for a 20g loose-leaf pouch (about 10 cups), £6.00 for 50g, or £13.00 for 40 tea bags at Bird & Blend, checked 3 Oct 2026.

Bird & Blend says it designed this blend for people who love a classic breakfast brew but want to avoid caffeine. It’s pricier than supermarket bags, but the small pouch is a cheap way to try it. Brewing loose leaf? Our guide to the best tea infusers covers the kit.

Flavoured and loose-leaf options

  • Twinings Rooibos & Honey: £2.79 for 20 bags at Twinings, checked 3 Oct 2026. Twinings describes it as a honey and fig flavour rooibos with cinnamon.
  • Whittard Rainforest Rooibos: £12.95 for a 100g loose-leaf pouch at Whittard, checked 3 Oct 2026. This is a green rooibos with mango, papaya and orange flavours.

How to brew rooibos, with or without milk

Rooibos is easier to brew than black tea. The brands we checked give different times: Tick Tock suggests two to four minutes and Clipper three to five. Both say freshly boiled water is fine, and both say you can add milk or leave it out.

  • With milk: brew at the longer end of the range so the flavour holds up, then add a splash of milk. Breakfast-style blends like Bird & Blend’s are made for this.
  • Without milk: the shorter end of the range gives a lighter cup. Tick Tock also suggests a slice of lemon, or drinking it iced with mint.
  • Hard water: if your kettle furs up, you may notice a film on top of your cup. Our page on the best tea for hard water explains why it happens and what helps.

FAQs

Is rooibos the same as redbush?

Yes. Rooibos is the Afrikaans name and redbush is the English translation. Clipper’s product is called Organic Rooibos, while Tetley sells the same kind of infusion as Redbush.

Does rooibos have caffeine?

NHS patient advice from University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust says redbush tea has no caffeine, and the brands we checked sell rooibos as caffeine-free. Flavoured blends can contain other ingredients, though, so check the label on anything that isn’t plain rooibos.

Can you put milk in rooibos?

Yes. Clipper, Tick Tock and Bird & Blend all say their rooibos works with or without milk.

Where can you buy rooibos tea in the UK?

Both supermarkets we could check online had it. Morrisons and Sainsbury’s both stock Tick Tock and their own-label rooibos, and Morrisons has Tetley Redbush. For Clipper’s organic rooibos, the brand’s own shop had it in stock today.
