Best travel mug: leakproof, insulated mugs for coffee on the go
Insulated travel mugs from Hydro Flask, Stanley and Chilly's compared on size, lids and the makers' own heat claims, with UK prices checked 3 Oct 2026.

A good travel mug keeps your coffee hot, stays shut in a bag and fits the car’s cup holder. The best travel mug for you depends mostly on how long your journey is and whether you’ll be tipping it upside down in a rucksack. We’ve compared four insulated mugs from Hydro Flask, Stanley and Chilly’s sold in the UK, and quoted each maker’s heat claim as a claim. We haven’t tested this in person. Our picks are based on published specs, the retailers’ listings and UK prices checked on 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.
Best travel mug UK: the short answer
Buy the Hydro Flask Travel Mug 355ml if you want the longest heat claim and a lid that locks. It’s £24.95 at Lakeland, checked 3 Oct 2026. Lakeland says its double-wall vacuum insulation keeps hot drinks hot for up to 12 hours, the Flex Sip lid locks closed and is leakproof, and the powder-coat exterior is dishwasher safe.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants a big mug. 355ml is a regular coffee, not a large one.
Get the Stanley AeroLight Travel Mug 350ml if weight matters. Check price at Lakeland. Lakeland describes it as lightweight, with a leakproof lid and hot drinks kept warm for up to four hours.
Who it isn’t for: long commutes or all-day sipping. Four hours is the shortest hot claim here.
Choose the Chilly’s Original Coffee Cup if you want two sizes to pick from. The 340ml is £24.00 and the 500ml is £29.00 at Chilly’s, checked 3 Oct 2026. Chilly’s says it has a leak-proof flip-open lock lid and keeps drinks hot for up to six hours.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants the cheapest option. The cheapest pick here is lower still.
Skip the upgrade unless you like the design. The Chilly’s Coffee Cup Series 2 is £32.00 for 340ml at Chilly’s, checked 3 Oct 2026, with a twist-close mechanism and antimicrobial drinking surfaces, but Chilly’s doesn’t give a hot-drink time on the page we checked.
Who it isn’t for: anyone choosing on heat retention alone.
What matters in a travel mug
A leakproof lid. Every mug here is described as leakproof, but there’s a difference between a lid that locks and one that’s just tight. If it goes in a bag, look for a lock, like Hydro Flask’s Flex Sip lid or Chilly’s flip-open lock lid.
Insulation. All four use double-walled insulation. The maker’s hours figure is a useful guide, but conditions differ: a pre-warmed mug kept indoors will do better than one left in a cold car. Rinsing the mug with hot water before filling helps.
Cup-holder fit. Lakeland says the Hydro Flask is designed to fit in a cup holder. For the others, check the base diameter against your car’s holder if that matters to you.
Fitting under a coffee machine. If you want to brew straight into the mug, measure the gap between your machine’s drip tray and spout. A 500ml mug is usually too tall for compact espresso machines, but often fine under a bean-to-cup machine with an adjustable spout.
Who it isn’t for: if you only carry coffee from the kitchen to the desk, a basic insulated mug without a locking lid will do.
Size: how much coffee fits?
- 340ml to 355ml: a standard flat white or latte, with room to spare for a short commute.
- 500ml: a large coffee or a top-up for a long journey.
Bigger isn’t always better. A half-full insulated mug cools faster than a full one, because there’s more air inside.
Who it isn’t for: if you buy a large coffee every morning, the 340ml sizes will feel small.
Cleaning and dishwasher safety
Coffee oils build up in lids and can leave a stale taste. Take the lid apart if the maker allows it, and wash it after every use. Lakeland lists the Hydro Flask’s exterior as dishwasher safe. For the others, check the care instructions on the maker’s page before putting any part in the dishwasher, as insulated bodies and lid seals can be damaged by heat.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who hates washing up should avoid lids with lots of small parts.
Bringing your own cup to coffee shops
Many UK coffee chains have given money off, or extra loyalty points, when you bring a reusable cup. Policies change, so check the chain’s own app or website before you rely on a discount. Some shops prefer to make your drink in their own cup and pour it into yours.
Downsides
- Claims are the makers’. Heat times are measured in conditions we can’t check.
- Size limits. None of these fits a very large coffee except the 500ml Chilly’s.
