How to descale a Nespresso Essenza Mini step by step
Nespresso Essenza Mini descaling from the official manual: what you need, the two-button descale mode, the rinse, how often to do it and what to do if it goes wrong.

Nespresso Essenza Mini descaling takes about 15 minutes and needs only two buttons, but the steps are easy to get wrong if you haven’t done it before. Limescale builds up inside any machine that heats water, and Nespresso’s troubleshooting table lists descaling as a fix for slow flow, coffee that isn’t hot enough and no water coming through. We haven’t tested this in person. The steps below come from the Nespresso Essenza Mini user manual (EN85, made by De’Longhi), which we read on 3 Oct 2026. Always check the manual that came with your machine. Read how we compare.
Short answer: how to descale a Nespresso Essenza Mini
Put one sachet of Nespresso descaling liquid in the tank, fill to the 0.6 L line, then hold the Espresso and Lungo buttons together for 5 seconds. Run the tank through with the Lungo button, pour the used solution back in and run it again. Rinse twice with fresh water, then hold both buttons for 5 seconds to leave descaling mode.
Who it isn’t for: owners of Vertuo machines. The Vertuo cycle is different, so use our Vertuo descaling guide instead.
When the Essenza Mini needs descaling
The Essenza Mini manual we read doesn’t describe a descaling alert light. Instead, it gives a schedule based on how hard your water is, counted in 40 ml espresso cups:
| Water hardness | Descale after |
|---|---|
| Hard (36 fH, 360 mg/l calcium carbonate) | 300 cups |
| Medium (18 fH, 180 mg/l) | 600 cups |
| Soft (0 fH) | 1,200 cups |
Your water supplier’s website can tell you how hard your local water is. If you mostly make Lungo cups, you’re putting more water through the machine, so it makes sense to descale sooner rather than later.
What you need
- One sachet of Nespresso descaling liquid. That’s what the manual specifies. One version of the Essenza Mini manual says never to use any other product, to avoid damaging the machine. We couldn’t check Nespresso’s own prices on 3 Oct 2026 because its site blocked our check, and Currys didn’t list a Nespresso descaling kit when we searched that day.
- Fresh drinking water to fill the tank to the 0.6 L line, plus more for rinsing.
- A container that holds at least 1 litre, to go under the coffee outlet.
- About 15 minutes, which is Nespresso’s estimate.
The manual warns that the descaling solution can be harmful, so avoid getting it on your eyes, skin and worktops. Wipe up any splashes straight away.
How to descale a Nespresso Essenza Mini: step by step
- Eject the capsule. Lift and close the lever to drop any used capsule into the container.
- Empty the trays. Empty the drip tray, drip base and used capsule container.
- Add the descaler. Pour one sachet of Nespresso descaling liquid into the water tank and fill with drinking water up to the 0.6 L line.
- Put the container in place. Stand your 1 litre container under the coffee outlet.
- Enter descaling mode. With the machine switched on, press and hold the Espresso and Lungo buttons together for 5 seconds. Both lights blink to show you’re in descaling mode.
- Run the solution through. Press the Lungo button and wait until the water tank is empty.
- Run it a second time. Pour the used solution from the container back into the water tank. Put the empty container back under the outlet and press Lungo again until the tank is empty.
- Rinse the tank. Empty and rinse the water tank, then fill it with fresh drinking water. Empty the drip base.
- Rinse the machine twice. Put the container back, press Lungo and let the tank run through. Nespresso says to do this rinse twice.
- Leave descaling mode. Press and hold the Espresso and Lungo buttons together for 5 seconds. Empty the drip base again.
Nespresso’s US descaling guide for the same machine adds a few extra rinse runs because the tank is small, and suggests letting the machine rest for 10 minutes afterwards. That’s a different market’s guide, so treat it as extra care rather than a UK instruction.
If something goes wrong part-way
The manual doesn’t describe what to do if the cycle is interrupted. If yours stops part-way, contact Nespresso before making coffee, because descaling solution may still be inside the machine. The troubleshooting table says that if the lights blink irregularly, you should call Nespresso or send the machine for repair.
If the lights are still blinking after the rinse, the manual’s exit step is to hold both buttons for 5 seconds, so try that again.
Tips to descale less often
- Use the right cup size. The schedule is counted in 40 ml cups, so bigger drinks use more water and need more frequent descaling.
- Clean the parts that come off. The manual says to empty the drip tray, drip base and capsule container every day. Wash the tank and lid with mild, unscented washing-up liquid, rinse in warm water and dry.
- Wipe, don’t soak. Never put the machine in water or the dishwasher. Wipe the coffee outlet and inside the machine with a damp cloth.
Downsides
- No reminder light in the manual we read, so you have to keep track of when you last descaled.
- Nespresso’s own descaler is the only product the manual names, and we couldn’t confirm its UK price.
- The small tank means extra rinsing to clear the solution fully.
