The best compostable coffee pods in the UK

The best compostable coffee pods UK shops sell for Nespresso Original and other systems: what home and industrial compostable mean, council disposal advice and prices checked 3 Oct 2026.

The best compostable coffee pods UK shoppers can buy come with a catch: “compostable” means different things on different packs, and most UK councils don’t want any coffee pods in the food waste caddy. This guide compares the main compostable options, mostly for Nespresso Original machines, explains home-compostable versus industrially compostable, and sets out what councils actually say about disposal. We haven’t tested this in person. Picks are based on the makers’ own claims and prices checked on 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.

Home-compostable vs industrially compostable

These two labels sound alike but aren’t:

  • Home-compostable means the maker says the pod will break down in a garden compost heap or bin, at the lower temperatures a home heap reaches. This is the claim that matters if you want to dispose of pods yourself.
  • Industrially compostable (sometimes just “compostable”) usually means the material breaks down in a commercial composting plant at higher temperatures. If your council doesn’t send waste to that kind of plant, it may never get the chance.
  • Biodegradable on its own says little about how long breakdown takes or where.

Look for the word “home” on the pack. If it just says “compostable”, check the maker’s site for what it means.

Who it isn’t for: anyone without a compost heap. Without one, a compostable pod usually goes in general waste anyway.

What UK councils say about compostable pods

Council guidance is clear and fairly consistent:

  • North London Waste Authority says compostable plastic coffee pods should go in general waste, not food or garden waste. Its food waste goes to anaerobic digestion plants that strip out all packaging, compostable or not.
  • Bedford Borough Council says coffee pods and packaging labelled “compostable” shouldn’t go in the food caddy, because its treatment process isn’t long enough for them to break down.
  • Bristol Waste Company says compostable pods can’t go through the Podback recycling scheme, which takes aluminium and plastic pods from member brands, and to follow the maker’s guidance instead.

So, in practice, a compostable pod is either for your own home compost heap or for general waste. Check your own council’s rules. Our are Nespresso pods recyclable? page covers recycling aluminium pods instead.

Who it isn’t for: anyone hoping to put pods in the council food caddy. Most councils say no.

Best compostable coffee pods UK: the picks

Grind: best for Nespresso Original

Grind describes all its pods as home-compostable, made from plants and filled with speciality-grade coffee. They fit original-style Nespresso machines and Grind’s own pod machine. Blends include House, Light and Dark, plus decaf and flavoured options.

Prices at Grind, checked 3 Oct 2026:

  • 10 pods: £4.75 (48p a pod)
  • 30 pods: £14.25 (48p a pod)
  • 100 pods: £43.95 (44p a pod)

Grind says delivery is free and subscriptions save up to 25%.

Who it isn’t for: Vertuo owners. Grind’s pods are for Nespresso Original machines only.

Lavazza A Modo Mio: compostable, but its own system

Lavazza says its A Modo Mio capsules are compostable, each holding up to 7.5g of coffee. They only fit Lavazza A Modo Mio machines, not Nespresso. A 16-capsule pack was £6.45 at Lavazza UK, checked 3 Oct 2026, or about 40p a capsule. Lavazza says “compostable” rather than “home-compostable”, so check the pack for how to dispose of them. Our Lavazza A Modo Mio pods guide covers the range and machines.

Who it isn’t for: anyone with a Nespresso machine.

Kimbo compostable paper pods

Kimbo sells compostable paper pods, such as Espresso Napoletano and Espresso Barista 100% Arabica, at £5.07 for a 105g pack at Kimbo at Home, checked 3 Oct 2026. These are paper pods, not Nespresso capsules, and Kimbo’s listing doesn’t say which machines take them, so check your machine accepts paper pods first. Delivery is £7 unless you spend over £50.

Who it isn’t for: Nespresso or Dolce Gusto owners.

What about Dolce Gusto and Vertuo?

We couldn’t find compostable pods for Nescafé Dolce Gusto or Nespresso Vertuo from the retailers and brands we checked on 3 Oct 2026. If you own one of those, a recycling route such as Podback is the more likely option. See our capsule coffee hub and best Nespresso pods guide.

Who it isn’t for: Nespresso Original owners, who have the most compostable choice.

How to dispose of compostable pods

  1. Home compost heap: only for pods the maker says are home-compostable, such as Grind’s. Follow the maker’s guidance.
  2. Council food or garden waste: most councils we checked say no. Check yours.
  3. General waste: the default if you don’t compost at home.
  4. Podback and other recycling schemes: not for compostable pods, per Bristol Waste Company.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants zero-effort disposal. Aluminium pods with a Podback route can be simpler.

Downsides

  • Council food caddies usually won’t take them.
  • Claims vary. “Compostable” and “home-compostable” aren’t the same.
  • Limited choice outside Nespresso Original.
  • We haven’t verified certification for any of these claims.
