See every pick at a glance

The Philips 4400 vs 5500 choice is closer than the model numbers suggest. On Philips UK’s pages, both LatteGo machines have the same 12-step ceramic grinder, 1.8-litre tank, 275g bean container, SilentBrew and Eco Settings. The differences are the size of the drinks menu and the number of user profiles. The catch is availability: the Series 5500 EP5546/70 was in stock at £669.99 at Currys, but we couldn’t find a current UK price for the Series 4400 EP4446/70 (checked 3 Oct 2026). We haven’t tested this in person. Our verdict is based on Philips UK’s specs, Currys’ listings, the Guardian’s bean-to-cup roundup (April 2026), which included the LatteGo 5500, and UK prices checked 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.

Profiles and display

The Guardian liked the 5500’s controls, including its four colour-coded user accounts.

Who it isn’t for: couples. Two profiles plus a guest on the 4400 cover most two-person homes, so the 5500’s extra profiles may not matter.

Milk, noise and maintenance

Both use LatteGo, with a 0.26-litre milk container on the 4400 (Philips UK) and 260ml on the 5500 (Currys). Philips says LatteGo has two parts and no tubes and can be cleaned in under 10 seconds, under the tap or in the dishwasher.

The Guardian found the 5500’s LatteGo froth coarse and bubbly, and noted the machine doesn’t prompt you to attach the frother. The Guardian didn’t test the 4400.

Philips UK lists SilentBrew on both, saying they’re 40% quieter than earlier Philips models, with Quiet Mark certification. Both have QuickStart, five Eco Settings and an AquaClean filter, which Philips says means no descaling for up to 5,000 cups if you change it when prompted.

Who it isn’t for: latte art fans. LatteGo is about convenience.

Downsides

  • 4400: no current UK price found, and fewer profiles and recipes.
  • 5500: the one of the two with a current UK price, but the Guardian’s test found watery espresso on default settings and a plasticky build, and it didn’t test the 4400 to compare.
