This Sage Dual Boiler review covers a manual espresso machine made for people who want café-style control at home. Its headline feature is in the name: two boilers, one for the espresso shot and one for steam, so you can pull a shot and froth milk at the same time. Check price at Sage UK. We haven’t tested this in person. Our verdict is based on Sage UK’s published product page and specs, plus UK retailer listings and prices checked 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.

The short version: it’s a serious machine for people who enjoy the manual part of making espresso, especially milk drinks. It doesn’t grind beans, so the real cost is the machine plus a grinder.

Sage Dual Boiler review: the short answer

Buy the Dual Boiler if you make lattes, flat whites or cappuccinos most days, often more than one at a time, and you’d like to steam milk while your shot is still running. Sage UK says its espresso boiler is PID temperature controlled, while a separate steam boiler gives steam on demand.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants coffee at the press of a button. You grind, dose, tamp and steam yourself.

What it costs right now

We checked these on 3 Oct 2026:

  • Sage the Dual Boiler: Check price at Sage UK.
  • Currys: we couldn’t find the Dual Boiler itself. A Currys search for “sage dual boiler” on 3 Oct 2026 returned the Oracle Dual Boiler (SES995), a different machine that Currys lists as bean-to-cup, at £2,499.99 at Currys, checked 3 Oct 2026. Don’t confuse the two.
  • Amazon UK and other retailers: Check current price. We haven’t included prices we couldn’t confirm.

Sage UK also listed two add-ons alongside the machine: the Naked Portafilter 58mm at £89.95 at Sage UK, checked 3 Oct 2026, and the Knock Box 10 at £29.95 at Sage UK, checked 3 Oct 2026. Neither is needed to get started.

Who needs a dual boiler?

Most single-boiler or thermoblock machines heat water for the shot and then switch to steam, so you often wait between the two jobs. A dual boiler machine keeps the two jobs separate. Sage UK says this one gives simultaneous extraction and steam, with a heated group head.

That matters most if you make milk drinks back to back, for a household or for guests. If you mostly drink espresso or americano and rarely steam milk, the second boiler does far less for you, and you’ll be paying for capacity you won’t use.

Who it isn’t for: people who only want the odd espresso. The main advantage of the design is brewing and steaming at the same time.

Specs from Sage UK

These are the specs Sage UK lists on its Dual Boiler page:

  • Heating: a dual boiler system with stainless steel boilers. The espresso boiler and heated group head use PID temperature control, according to Sage UK.
  • Pump and pressure: low-pressure pre-infusion, followed by a 9-bar extraction delivered through a 15-bar Italian pump.
  • Portafilter: a 58mm stainless steel portafilter holding a 22g dose, with single and dual wall filter baskets in one-cup and two-cup sizes.
  • Shot control: one-shot and two-shot settings, or manual control over how much espresso you pour, using volumetric or timed control.
  • Display: an LCD screen and a pressure gauge.
  • Milk: a manual steam wand for frothing milk yourself.
  • Grinder: none. You’ll need a separate grinder.
  • In the box: a 58mm Razor dosing tool, the portafilter and baskets, an integrated tamper, a 16oz stainless steel milk jug, a cleaning kit, a water hardness test strip, and a water filter holder with filter.
  • Size: 37.9 x 40.3 x 37.1cm (width x depth x height), with a brushed stainless steel exterior.

Measure the space under your wall cupboards before ordering, and remember you’ll need room beside the machine for a grinder.

Pairing it with a grinder

Because the Dual Boiler has no grinder, you’ll need one that can grind finely and consistently enough for espresso. Sage’s own option is the Smart Grinder Pro, £209.95 at Sage UK, checked 3 Oct 2026. Sage UK says it has 60 grind settings, an LCD screen and Dosing iQ, which lets you set grind time in 0.2-second steps, and that it can grind straight into a portafilter.

Bought together from Sage UK, the Dual Boiler and Smart Grinder Pro (£209.95 at Sage UK, checked 3 Oct 2026) are the set-up to compare against machines with a grinder built in. If you’d like to look beyond Sage, our coffee grinders guide covers more options.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants one box on the worktop. A separate grinder takes up extra space and adds another thing to clean.

Downsides

  • No grinder: you’ll need to buy one, which adds to the cost and takes up space.
  • Manual milk: the steam wand gives you control, but there’s no automatic frothing. You’ll need to learn to texture milk yourself.
  • One retailer: we only found it at Sage UK, so check price at Sage UK.
  • Hard to find at Currys: a Currys search on 3 Oct 2026 showed only the pricier Oracle Dual Boiler, so you may be limited to buying direct.
  • A learning curve: a pressure gauge, pre-infusion and manual shot control are rewarding if you enjoy tweaking, but can be frustrating if you just want a quick drink.
  • Upkeep: like any espresso machine, it needs regular cleaning and descaling. Set the water hardness with the test strip in the box and use the water filter Sage supplies.
