Best kettle for hard water areas: kettles with filters that fight limescale

Kettles for UK hard water areas compared on filters, concealed elements and capacity, plus the filter-jug option, with Currys prices checked 3 Oct 2026.

Finding the best kettle for hard water in the UK comes down to two things: a filter that keeps scale flakes out of your cup, and an element design that’s easy to descale. One kettle on our list goes further, with a Brita cartridge that treats the water before it boils. We haven’t tested this in person. This guide is based on Currys’ product listings and prices checked 3 Oct 2026, the Drinking Water Inspectorate’s guidance on water hardness and Brita UK’s cartridge information. Read how we compare.

Best kettle for hard water UK: the short answer

Get the Russell Hobbs Brita Purity 20760-10 if limescale really bothers you. It was £46.99 at Currys. Currys says it comes with a Brita Maxtra Pro Limescale Expert cartridge and has a cartridge replacement reminder.

Who it isn’t for: families who fill the kettle to the top. Currys lists a 1-litre capacity.

Get the Bosch TWK7S05GB if you want a full-size kettle that’s simple to keep clean. It was £49.99 at Currys, checked 3 Oct 2026. Currys lists a covered element and a removable spout filter.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants less scale in the first place. A spout filter catches flakes but doesn’t treat the water.

Get the Bosch MyMoments TWK1M127GB if you’re on a tighter budget. It was £34.99 at Currys, checked 3 Oct 2026, with the same covered-element and removable-filter approach.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants a glass kettle to see scale building up.

What hard water does to a kettle

The DWI explains that hard water causes scaling in kettles: calcium and magnesium deposits build up on heating elements, shorten their life and make appliances less efficient. It also mentions the scum you sometimes see on hot drinks, especially tea brewed in the mug.

Your water company can tell you how hard your water is. Many have postcode checkers on their websites.

Who it isn’t for: anyone in a soft water area. A standard kettle with a basic filter is enough.

Filter, cartridge or concealed element?

There are three different features to look for:

  • Spout filter: a mesh in the spout that catches loose flakes when you pour. Every kettle in our table has one, according to Currys. It doesn’t stop scale forming.
  • Concealed element: the heating element sits under a flat plate rather than as an exposed coil. Currys’ listing for the Bosch TWK7S05GB says its covered element means you won’t need to descale as often. A flat base is also easier to wipe and descale.
  • Water filter cartridge: used in the Russell Hobbs Brita Purity. The DWI says some jug filters with ion exchange resin can reduce scale in kettles, though they don’t alter the water’s permanent hardness.

Who it isn’t for: anyone hoping a spout filter alone will stop descaling. It only catches what’s already formed.

The picks

Russell Hobbs Brita Purity 20760-10: £46.99 at Currys. Currys lists Brita filtration with a Maxtra Pro Limescale Expert cartridge, an anti-limescale filter and a concealed element. It also lists a cartridge replacement reminder, a one-cup function, a 3,000W element and a 1-litre glass body. Currys says the filtration removes impurities that affect taste, and that the cartridge helps reduce limescale build-up.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who doesn’t want to buy replacement cartridges.

Bosch TWK7S05GB: £49.99 at Currys, checked 3 Oct 2026. It has a 1.7-litre stainless steel and silicone body, a concealed element and a spout filter that lifts out for cleaning. Currys lists 3,000W and a 2-year guarantee.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants temperature control.

Bosch MyMoments TWK1M127GB: £34.99 at Currys, checked 3 Oct 2026. It’s a 1.7-litre plastic kettle with a covered element and a removable limescale filter, according to Currys. It also has cup and water level markers, so you can boil only what you need.

Who it isn’t for: anyone avoiding a plastic body.

De’Longhi Icona Capitals KBOC3001.W: £45 at Currys, checked 3 Oct 2026. Currys lists a stainless steel body, a concealed element and a washable limescale filter, and describes the filter as useful in hard water areas. Note that Currys lists a 1-year guarantee, shorter than the Bosch kettles’ two years.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants a longer guarantee.

Tefal Selection KO760DG0: £59.99 at Currys, checked 3 Oct 2026. Currys lists a glass body, a concealed element, a removable anti-limescale filter and five temperature settings. The glass lets you see scale forming, so you know when to descale.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants a fast boil. Currys lists 1,850–2,200W rather than 3,000W.

The filter jug option

If you’d rather keep your current kettle, a filter jug can do a similar job to the Brita Purity’s cartridge. The Brita Marella was £33.99 at Currys, which lists a 2.4-litre jug with 1.4 litres of filtered water. Brita UK describes its Maxtra Pro Limescale Expert cartridge as made for hard water areas. It says each cartridge filters up to 150 litres over 4 weeks. The six-pack was unavailable on Brita’s online shop when we checked. A three-pack was £23 at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who won’t change cartridges on time. Brita gives a four-week cartridge life.

Keeping scale down day to day

  • Empty the kettle after use rather than reboiling old water.
  • Boil only what you need. The level markers on most of these kettles help.
  • Rinse the spout filter regularly, and soak it when you descale.
  • Descale following the maker’s instructions. How often depends on your water.

Who it isn’t for: anyone hoping for no maintenance at all. Every kettle in a hard water area needs descaling eventually.

Downsides to know

  • Brita Purity: small 1-litre capacity and ongoing cartridge costs.
  • Spout-filter kettles: they catch flakes but don’t reduce the hardness of your water.
  • Glass kettles: scale is visible, which some people see as a downside.
