The best organic coffee beans in the UK
Organic coffee beans you can buy in UK supermarkets and from Lavazza, what the UK organic label means, how organic differs from Fairtrade, and prices checked on 3 Oct 2026.

The best organic coffee beans UK supermarkets stock come mainly from one brand, Cafédirect, with Lavazza offering an organic bean blend online and Morrisons an own-label organic ground coffee. This guide compares them by size and price per kilo, explains what the organic label means on a UK pack, and how organic differs from Fairtrade. We haven’t tested this in person. Picks are based on pack details and prices checked on 3 Oct 2026, not on taste. Read how we compare.
What the UK organic label means
The Soil Association, the UK’s best-known organic certifier, says organic food is grown and made without synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilisers or genetically modified ingredients. Since the UK left the EU, Great Britain has kept its own organic regulations, and any product the Soil Association certifies must meet those legal rules as well as its own standards.
In practice, for coffee:
- “Organic” on a UK pack is a regulated claim. The pack should carry a certification mark and name its certifier.
- It’s about how the coffee was grown, not how it tastes or how strong it is.
- It isn’t a health claim. Organic coffee isn’t sold as healthier, and this guide doesn’t suggest it is.
Who it isn’t for: anyone choosing on flavour alone. Organic tells you about farming, not the cup.
Best organic coffee beans UK: the picks
Cafédirect Organic Machu Picchu, 750g beans: best for organic beans on a budget

Who it isn’t for: bean-to-cup owners. You need whole beans.
Which organic beans suit which machine?
- Espresso or bean-to-cup machine: Lavazza Espresso Maestro Organic is the one sold as an espresso blend. Cafédirect’s medium-dark Machu Picchu beans will also go in a bean-to-cup hopper.
- Cafetière or filter, with a grinder: Cafédirect Machu Picchu. Its ground version is labelled for filter and cafetière.
- No grinder: buy Morrisons Organic or Cafédirect ground instead.
Who it isn’t for: pod machine owners. These are beans and ground coffee only.
Organic vs Fairtrade: what’s the difference?
They’re separate schemes that answer different questions:
- Organic covers how the coffee is farmed: no synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilisers or GM ingredients, checked by a certifier such as the Soil Association.
- Fairtrade covers the trading terms for farmers, including a minimum price.
A coffee can be one, both or neither. Cafédirect’s Machu Picchu packs carry both. Many supermarket coffees, such as Sainsbury’s Fairtrade Espresso beans, are Fairtrade without being organic.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who only cares about one scheme. Check for that mark specifically.
Organic vs cheaper non-organic beans
Organic beans cost more. The cheapest non-organic 1kg bags we found on 3 Oct 2026 were £14.25 a kilo (Morrisons Espresso Blend and Sainsbury’s Fairtrade Espresso), against £23.00 a kilo and up for Cafédirect’s organic beans. Our best value coffee beans guide compares the cheap end, and our coffee beans hub covers brands.
Who it isn’t for: anyone on a tight budget. Organic beans cost a third or more extra per kilo.
Downsides
- Limited supermarket choice. Cafédirect dominated the organic beans we found.
- Higher prices than non-organic equivalents.
- We couldn’t check Tesco, Asda, Ocado or Waitrose, which blocked our checks.
