Best coffee beans for moka pot UK shoppers, plus ground coffee
Moka-labelled ground coffee and espresso beans from UK supermarkets and Lavazza UK, with prices checked 3 Oct 2026, plus the grind and filling rules Bialetti gives.

The best coffee beans for moka pot UK shoppers can buy are Italian-style espresso blends, and if you don’t grind at home, ground coffee that says “moka” on the pack. Bialetti, which makes the Moka Express, says moka coffee should be a medium grain, coarser than an espresso blend, “otherwise the water would have trouble passing through the powder”. Lavazza UK says each of its ground blends is ground for the method it’s sold for, whether moka, espresso or filter. So the packs below are the ones Lavazza lists for moka, plus two bean options for people with a grinder.
We haven’t tested this in person. This guide uses Bialetti’s and Lavazza’s own guidance and UK shop listings checked 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.

What makes good coffee for a moka pot
A moka pot isn’t an espresso machine, as our guide on how to make espresso at home explains. Steam pressure in the base pushes hot water up through a funnel of coffee and into the top chamber. That gives a strong, small cup, but at far lower pressure than a pump machine. Three things matter most.
Grind. Bialetti’s guidance is a medium grain, coarser than you’d use for espresso. Too fine and the water struggles through, which Bialetti says can give a burnt, bad-tasting coffee. Its check is simple: swirl the cup before you drink, and if there’s a thick layer of powder at the bottom, the grind was too fine. Our guide to grind size for a moka pot goes into more detail.
Roast and blend. Italian blends roasted for espresso and moka tend to be medium to dark, and many mix arabica with robusta for a heavier body. A light, fruity roast can taste thin and sharp from a moka pot. That’s a matter of taste, though, not a rule.
Freshness. Bialetti says air, water, humidity and heat are coffee’s biggest enemies, and that ground coffee loses aroma more quickly. Reseal the pack and keep it somewhere cool and dry. If you grind beans just before brewing, this matters less.
Best ground coffee for a moka pot
Lavazza Qualità Rossa ground: the everyday pick. Rossa is £6.25 for 250g at Sainsbury’s and at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026. Lavazza UK lists it as a medium roast arabica and robusta blend with chocolate notes, intensity 5 of 10, for filter, French press and moka. It’s on most big supermarket shelves, so it’s easy to rebuy. Our Lavazza Qualità Rossa review covers it in full.
Who it isn’t for: anyone after a very dark, punchy cup. Rossa sits in the middle of Lavazza’s scale.
Lavazza Crema e Gusto Classico ground: the lowest price per kg. The twin pack is £9.95 for 2 x 250g at Sainsbury’s, checked 3 Oct 2026. That’s £19.90 a kilo at full price, checked 3 Oct 2026. Lavazza UK lists it as a dark roast arabica and robusta blend with spicy notes, intensity 7 of 10, for filter and moka.
Who it isn’t for: people who drink their moka coffee black and want something gentle. It’s one of Lavazza’s darker ground blends.
Lavazza Qualità Oro ground: the 100% arabica pick. Oro is £6.50 for 250g at Sainsbury’s, checked 3 Oct 2026. Lavazza UK lists it as 100% arabica, medium roast, floral and fruity, intensity 5 of 10, for filter and moka. It’s the lighter-tasting choice of these picks.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who adds a lot of milk. A floral, fruity blend can get lost under it.
Lavazza Crema e Gusto Dolce ground: the only pack here listed for moka alone. It’s £5.75 for 250g at Lavazza UK, checked 3 Oct 2026; check price at Morrisons. Lavazza UK lists it as a medium roast arabica and robusta blend with fruity notes, intensity 6 of 10, and moka is its only brewing method.
Who it isn’t for: cafetière or filter users. Lavazza doesn’t list it for either.
Lavazza Espresso Barista Intenso ground: the strongest flavour. It’s £8.00 for 250g at Sainsbury’s, checked 3 Oct 2026. Lavazza UK lists it as a medium roast arabica and robusta blend with cocoa and woody notes, intensity 9 of 10, for espresso and moka.

For a decaf, Lavazza UK lists its Decaf ground coffee for espresso and moka, at £6.50 for 250g, checked 3 Oct 2026.
Best coffee beans for moka pot UK buyers can grind at home
Grinding your own lets you set the grind for your pot, rather than trusting the pack. You need a grinder that can go a little coarser than espresso and stay consistent, so see our best coffee grinder for a moka pot guide.
Lavazza Qualità Rossa beans: the beans pick. The 1kg bag is £22.50 at Sainsbury’s, checked 3 Oct 2026. Lavazza UK says Rossa beans are ideal for espresso and moka. A kilo lasts a while, so reseal the bag well.
Who it isn’t for: people without a grinder. Buy the ground version instead.
Union Revelation Espresso beans: a UK-roasted option. The 200g bag is £7.50 at Sainsbury’s, checked 3 Oct 2026. Union sells it as an espresso blend, so set your grinder a little coarser than you would for an espresso machine.
Who it isn’t for: anyone watching the price per kilo. It’s £37.50 a kilo at Sainsbury’s, checked 3 Oct 2026.
How to brew moka coffee well
Bialetti’s own steps are short:
- Fill the base with water up to, but not above, the safety valve.
- Fill the funnel generously to the edge with ground coffee. Don’t pile a mound on top, and don’t press it down.
- Check the rubber gasket is in place and screw the two halves together firmly.
- Heat on a low flame. Bialetti says the water then rises more slowly and draws out more aroma.
- Turn off the heat once the coffee has fully risen into the top chamber, and drink it straight away.
If you still need a pot, our best moka pot guide compares stovetop pots, including induction-ready ones.
Downsides
- Pack labels vary. Only Lavazza’s listings clearly name moka as a method. Other supermarket packs often just say espresso, which may be ground finer than Bialetti suggests.
- Prices change. Supermarket coffee prices move often, so check price at Morrisons on the day.
- Some shops weren’t checked. Tesco, Waitrose and Ocado blocked our checks on 3 Oct 2026.
FAQ
Can you use espresso ground coffee in a moka pot? You can, but Bialetti says moka coffee should be coarser than an espresso blend. If you see a lot of powder in the bottom of the cup, try a moka-labelled pack or a coarser home grind.
Should you tamp coffee in a moka pot? No. Bialetti says to fill the funnel to the edge without a mound and never press it down.
Where can you find more coffee picks? Our coffee beans hub covers beans and ground coffee for every brewing method.
Is a dark roast better for a moka pot? Not always. Darker Italian blends suit many moka drinkers, but a medium roast like Lavazza Qualità Rossa or Oro is a good place to start.
