Taylors coffee beans: which Taylors of Harrogate blend to buy

The five Taylors of Harrogate house blends sold as whole beans, by Taylors' roast number, with 200g, 400g and 700g prices from Sainsbury's and Morrisons checked 3 Oct 2026.

Taylors coffee beans come in five of the Harrogate roaster’s house blends: Lazy Sunday, Rich Italian, Decaffé, Flying Start and Hot Lava Java. Taylors gives each blend a roast number, from 3 for the gentle Lazy Sunday up to 6 for the extra-dark Hot Lava Java. Most bean packs are 200g, and Rich Italian and Flying Start also come in 700g bags. If you want the short version, Rich Italian is the easiest to find in the most sizes, and Hot Lava Java is the one for dark-roast fans.

We haven’t tested this in person. This page uses Taylors’ own descriptions and Sainsbury’s and Morrisons listings checked 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.

How Taylors numbers its roasts

Each blend page on the Taylors UK site shows a “Roast” number. It describes how dark the roast is, not a measure of quality. Across the eight house blends on Taylors’ site, the numbers run from 3 to 6:

  • 3: Lazy Sunday
  • 4: Rich Italian, Decaffé, Rich Italian Decaf and Brasilia
  • 5: Flying Start and After Dark
  • 6: Hot Lava Java

Only five of those eight are sold as whole beans on Taylors’ site. Rich Italian Decaf, Brasilia and After Dark are ground only.

Taylors coffee beans: the five blends

Lazy Sunday (roast 3). Taylors calls it the product of a slow roast with gentle flavours, and describes subtle citrus and chocolate. Coffee from: Latin America and Africa, all arabica. The 200g bag of beans is £5.75 at Sainsbury’s and at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026. Our Taylors Lazy Sunday review covers it in full.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants a bold espresso. This is Taylors’ lightest blend.

Rich Italian (roast 4). Taylors describes a rich, smooth blend with hints of chocolate and nuts from Brazilian and Central American beans, and a little citrus from African beans. It says it doesn’t have the bitterness darker roasts often have. The 200g bag is £5.75 at Sainsbury’s and at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026. The 400g bag is £9.50 at Sainsbury’s, checked 3 Oct 2026. The 700g bag is £15.00 at Sainsbury’s, checked 3 Oct 2026, which works out at about £21.43 a kilo.

Who it isn’t for: dark-roast fans. It’s a mid-strength roast by Taylors’ own numbers.

Decaffé (roast 4). Taylors says it’s decaffeinated in Mexico using a water process rather than chemical solvents, and describes flavours of caramel and malt. Coffee from: Central America and Brazil. The 200g bag of beans is £5.75 at Sainsbury’s and at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants a bigger bag. We only found decaf beans in 200g.

Flying Start (roast 5). Taylors describes one of its darker roasts, rich in dark chocolate and hazelnut, made mainly from Latin American beans with a little East African coffee. We found the beans in the 700g bag, at £15.00 at Sainsbury’s and at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026.

Who it isn’t for: people who want to try it before buying a big bag. We didn’t find Flying Start beans in a 200g pack at either shop.

Hot Lava Java (roast 6). Taylors calls it an extra-dark roast with hints of smoke and black pepper, and says it’s “not for the coffee novice”. Unlike most Taylors blends, it includes some robusta alongside arabica. The 200g bag of beans is £5.75 at Sainsbury’s and at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026. Our Taylors Hot Lava Java page covers it in more detail.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who finds dark roasts bitter. Try Rich Italian first.

Which Taylors beans suit your machine

Espresso and bean-to-cup machines. Taylors’ bean pages include a pump espresso guide for all five blends. If you like a stronger shot, Flying Start or Hot Lava Java fit. Rich Italian is the middle ground. A 700g bag of Rich Italian or Flying Start makes sense for a bean-to-cup machine, since those machines get through beans quickly. Our coffee beans hub has more picks for bean-to-cup.

Cafetière. Taylors’ bean pages also have a cafetière guide: a tablespoon of coffee per mug, a coarse grind if you grind your own, water left a minute off the boil, and 4 to 5 minutes’ brewing. Lazy Sunday and Rich Italian are the gentler choices. If you’d rather buy ground, see our guide to the best ground coffee for a cafetière.

Filter and AeroPress. Taylors gives filter and AeroPress guides on its bean pages too. Lighter roasts like Lazy Sunday tend to suit these methods.

Where to buy Taylors coffee beans in the UK

Taylors’ site lists Asda, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waitrose, Co-op and Amazon as places to buy. On 3 Oct 2026, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons both had 200g bean packs at £5.75 and 700g bags at £15.00, checked 3 Oct 2026. Sainsbury’s also had a 400g bag of Rich Italian beans. We couldn’t check Tesco, Waitrose or Ocado, because their sites blocked our checks.

We didn’t find a 1kg bag of Taylors coffee beans at either shop. The 700g bags are the largest we saw.

Downsides

  • No 1kg bag. The largest Taylors bean bag we found was 700g.
  • Limited sizes. Lazy Sunday, Decaffé and Hot Lava Java beans came in 200g only at the shops we checked.
