The six machines in detail
De’Longhi Magnifica S ECAM250.33.TB
Currys lists a grinder with 13 settings, a 250g bean container, a 1.8-litre tank, a 15-bar pump and a steam wand. Currys lists its drinks as espresso, double espresso, coffee and long black, and the box includes descaler, a water filter and a spoon for pre-ground coffee.
Who it isn’t for: anyone with a shallow worktop. Currys lists it at 44cm deep.
De’Longhi Magnifica Evo ECAM290.31.SB
Same price at Currys, same 1.8-litre tank, 15-bar pump and steam wand, but Currys lists a slightly longer drinks menu, including a long coffee and a cappuccino option. De’Longhi UK lists five one-touch drinks for this model, including its Doppio+ option, and a 250g bean hopper. Watch the model code: other Magnifica Evo versions cost more and have different milk systems.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who’d pay the £419.99 De’Longhi UK price (checked 3 Oct 2026). At that level, there are better-equipped machines.
De’Longhi Magnifica Start ECAM220.22.GB
De’Longhi UK lists a 1.8-litre tank, a 15-bar pump, a manual milk frother and four one-touch recipes: espresso, coffee, long and steam. It’s £299.00 at Appliances Direct, checked 3 Oct 2026. Our Magnifica Start review covers it in depth.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who’d rather buy from a high-street retailer. We didn’t find this model code at Currys.
Melitta Purista F230-101
The Purista is for black coffee only. Currys lists a 1.2-litre tank, a 15-bar pump, a 200g bean container, cup volumes from 20ml to 225ml, a two-cup warmer and Melitta’s Companion app. At 20cm wide it’s slimmer than the De’Longhi machines, but it’s 45.9cm deep.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who ever wants a milky drink, or anyone short on depth.
Beko CaffeExperto CED7524X
The cheapest machine here, at £279.99 at Currys (checked 3 Oct 2026). Currys lists a colour touchscreen, seven one-touch drinks including cappuccino, latte and cold brew, a 150g bean hopper, a 1.5-litre tank and a 20-bar pump. The milk details are muddled, though: the listing says both “steam wand” and a 300ml milk container. Check how it froths milk before you buy.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants a longer guarantee. Currys lists one year, against two years on the Magnifica S, Magnifica Evo, Purista and Baristina.
Philips Baristina BAR300/60
The Baristina is a different kind of bean-to-cup machine: compact, with a portafilter-style handle and a fixed grind size. Currys lists espresso and lungo, a 1.2-litre tank, a 16-bar pump and an 18cm width, the slimmest here. There’s no milk system.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants to adjust the grind, or make milky drinks without a separate frother.
What you give up under £300
- Automatic milk. Every machine here with milk uses a steam wand or manual frother, apart from the Beko’s unclear listing. Our guide to milk frothers covers an easy add-on.
- Bigger screens and profiles. Most have simple buttons or icons.
- Shopping around. Several prices here were only confirmed at one retailer.
Who it isn’t for: if one-touch lattes are a must, this budget won’t get you there.
Worth stretching for?
A little more money opens up a few more options. On 3 Oct 2026, Currys had a Magnifica Evo with automatic milk (ECAM290.61.SB) at £349.00, in stock. The Philips Series 2200 EP2220/10 was £279 at John Lewis, checked 3 Oct 2026. Our guide to bean-to-cup machines under £500 covers that tier.
If you’d rather make espresso by hand, our guide to the best espresso machine under £500 covers manual machines at the same budget.
Downsides of every machine here
- Cleaning. Bean-to-cup machines need regular rinsing and descaling.
- Depth. Most are 42 to 46cm deep, according to Currys.
- Taste control. You can adjust strength and grind on most, but not as finely as with a manual machine and separate grinder.
