The best decaf coffee for you depends on how you brew. Whole beans suit a grinder or bean-to-cup machine, ground coffee suits a cafetière or moka pot, and instant suits a quick mug. This guide picks decaf options in each format, with UK prices checked on 3 Oct 2026 and, where the maker says, how the caffeine was removed. We haven’t tested this in person. How decaf coffee is made
Caffeine is removed from green coffee beans before they’re roasted. Makers use different methods, and the bag or product page usually tells you which. These are the ones named by the coffees on this page:
- Swiss Water Process. Swiss Water, the Canadian company behind it, says the process never uses chlorinated solvents or esters.
- Sugarcane process. Rave Coffee says its sugarcane decaf removes 99.9% of the caffeine without chemicals, and that it’s processed where the coffee is grown.
- Pure Water Process. Taylors of Harrogate says its Decaffé is decaffeinated in Mexico, using water enriched with natural coffee compounds to draw out the caffeine, repeated again and again.

Rave Colombia El Carmen Sugarcane Decaf Nº 77
£9.95 for 250g at Rave Coffee, checked 3 Oct 2026. A Colombian decaf, available as beans or ground. Rave says the sugarcane process keeps the beans’ sweetness and, because it happens where the coffee is grown, has a lower carbon footprint than other decaf processes. See it at Rave Coffee.
Who it isn’t for: anyone choosing on price alone. It costs more per 250g than the Swiss Water blend at today’s prices.
Lavazza Decaf Classico beans
£12.50 for 500g at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026 (£25 per kg). Lavazza describes it as a medium-roast blend of Arabica and Robusta, intensity 3 out of 10 on its own scale, with dry fruit notes. It suggests it for espresso, moka pot and filter. See it at Morrisons.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants to know the decaf method. Lavazza’s product page didn’t name it when we checked.

Taylors Decaffé is the one with the most published detail. Taylors says the beans come from Central America and Brazil and are decaffeinated by the Pure Water Process, and it describes the flavour as malted caramel.
