The best ground coffee for espresso machines in the UK
Which supermarket and Italian-brand ground coffees are actually labelled for espresso machines, which are really moka or cafetière grinds, and prices checked on 3 Oct 2026.

If you’re looking for the best espresso ground coffee UK supermarkets sell, the first surprise is how few packs labelled “espresso” are actually described as being for an espresso machine. We read the product information on the main ground coffees at Morrisons and from Kimbo on 3 Oct 2026. Only one, illy’s, says outright that it’s a fine espresso grind for machines that take tamped coffee. This guide sets out what each pack says, which suits which machine, and the prices on the day. We haven’t tested this in person. Read how we compare.
Why espresso needs a fine grind
An espresso machine pushes hot water through a tightly packed puck of coffee in around half a minute. That only works if the coffee is ground fine. Too coarse, and the water rushes through, giving a thin, sour shot. Moka pots use a slightly coarser grind, and cafetières a much coarser one.
There’s one big exception: pressurised baskets. Many entry-level espresso machines come with a pressurised (dual-wall) filter basket, which builds pressure itself. These are more forgiving and will make a passable shot with a pre-ground moka-style grind. Machines with standard (single-wall) baskets need a true espresso grind, usually from a grinder.
Check which basket your machine has before you buy. Our how to make espresso at home guide explains the difference.
Who it isn’t for: bean-to-cup owners. Those machines grind their own beans.
Best espresso ground coffee UK: the packs compared
illy Classico Espresso ground: the one labelled for espresso machines
illy describes this as a fine espresso grind for optimal extraction in coffee machines that accept ground, tamped coffee. It’s 100% arabica, medium roast, in a pressurised tin. £8.00 for 250g at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026, and £7.99 at illy UK, checked 3 Oct 2026.
It’s the dearest per kilo here at £32.00, but it’s the only pack we read that’s sold specifically for espresso machines.
Who it isn’t for: budget buyers. It costs about twice as much per kilo as own-label.
Lavazza Crema e Gusto Classico ground: the cheapest Italian option
Morrisons lists it as suitable for all coffee makers. Check price at Morrisons. Lavazza UK had it at £5.75, checked 3 Oct 2026.
“All coffee makers” means it’s a middle-of-the-road grind. Expect it to work best in a machine with a pressurised basket.
Who it isn’t for: owners of machines with standard baskets who want a precise shot.
Lavazza Espresso Italiano Classico and Qualità Rossa ground
Both say on the pack that they can be used with a moka pot, filter coffee machine or French press. Neither mentions an espresso machine, despite “Espresso” in the Classico name. Espresso Italiano Classico was £6.50 and Qualità Rossa £6.25 for 250g at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026.
Who it isn’t for: anyone with a standard-basket espresso machine. These are moka-style grinds by Lavazza’s own description.
Morrisons Espresso Ground: the cheapest
£3.60 for 227g at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026, or £15.86 a kilo. The pack calls it smooth, dark and creamy, strength 5. Its brewing instructions cover cafetières and “your coffee maker” but don’t mention espresso machines.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants the pack to confirm an espresso grind. It doesn’t.
Kimbo Intenso ground
Kimbo’s Neapolitan-style Intenso is 12/13 intensity, medium roast, at £5.62 for 250g at Kimbo at Home, checked 3 Oct 2026. Kimbo’s listing text didn’t state which machines it suits. Delivery is £7 unless you spend over £50.
Who it isn’t for: one-bag buyers. The delivery charge makes a single pack expensive.
Which to buy for your machine
- Standard (single-wall) basket: illy Classico Espresso ground, or better, whole beans and a grinder. Our best coffee grinder for espresso guide covers grinders.
- Pressurised basket: any of these will do. Lavazza Crema e Gusto or Morrisons Espresso are the cheapest per kilo.
- Not sure: start with a pressurised basket if your machine came with one; it’s more forgiving with supermarket ground coffee.
Machine advice is in our espresso machines hub.
Who it isn’t for: anyone using a moka pot. Lavazza’s moka-labelled packs suit you better than illy’s espresso grind.
Freshness tips
Ground coffee goes stale faster than beans. Buy small packs, close them tightly, and use them within a couple of weeks of opening. illy’s tin is pressurised for freshness until opened. If you get through less than 250g in a fortnight, consider beans: see our coffee beans hub.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who already grinds fresh. Whole beans stay fresher than any pre-ground pack.
Downsides
- Labels are vague. Most “espresso” ground coffee is really an all-purpose or moka grind.
- The true espresso grind costs more. illy was £32 a kilo.
- We couldn’t check Tesco, Asda, Ocado or Waitrose, which blocked our checks.
