Best moka pot: stovetop espresso makers for gas, electric and induction

Bialetti and La Cafetière moka pots sold in the UK, compared on material, size and hob compatibility, with prices checked 3 Oct 2026.

A moka pot makes strong, rich coffee on the hob with no electricity, pods or fuss. Picking the best moka pot in the UK mostly comes down to two things: aluminium or stainless steel, and whether it’ll work on your hob. We’ve compared five stovetop coffee makers from Bialetti and La Cafetière sold by UK retailers. We haven’t tested this in person. Our picks are based on published specs, the retailers’ listings and UK prices checked on 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.

Best moka pot UK: the short answer

Buy the La Cafetière Venice Aluminium 6-Cup if you have a gas or electric hob and want a classic pot for little money. It’s £22.99 at Lakeland, checked 3 Oct 2026. Lakeland lists a 290ml capacity and says it works on all stovetops except induction, including AGA.

Who it isn’t for: anyone with an induction hob, unless you add a conversion plate.

Get the Bialetti Moka Express Exclusive if you want the original brand in a retro finish. The 3-cup cream version is £50.00 at Sous Chef, checked 3 Oct 2026. Sous Chef lists an aluminium body, for gas and electric hobs, or induction with Bialetti’s plate.

Who it isn’t for: anyone on a budget. You’re paying for the name and the colour.

Choose the La Cafetière Verona Glass 6-Cup if you cook on induction and like to watch the coffee rise. It’s £67.99 at Lakeland, checked 3 Oct 2026, with a stainless steel base that Lakeland describes as induction-safe and a borosilicate glass top chamber.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants the cheapest induction option. See our moka pot for induction guide for plates and smaller steel pots.

Skip the designer editions unless the look matters. The Bialetti x Dolce & Gabbana Moka Express is £75.00 for the 3-cup at Sous Chef, checked 3 Oct 2026, and it’s the same aluminium Moka Express design in a decorated finish.

Who it isn’t for: anyone choosing on coffee alone.

Moka pot basics: how it works

A moka pot has three parts: a bottom chamber for water, a funnel-shaped basket for ground coffee, and a top chamber where the coffee collects. As the water heats, pressure pushes it up through the coffee and into the top. The result is short, strong and full-bodied. It’s not true espresso, which needs much higher pressure from a machine, but it’s close enough for many people and works brilliantly as a base for a milky drink.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants crema-topped espresso or latte art. Look at our espresso machines instead.

Cup sizes: smaller than you think

Moka pot “cups” are espresso cups, not mugs. La Cafetière bases its six-cup figure on a 48ml cup, so a 6-cup pot makes about 290ml in total. A 3-cup pot makes enough for one person’s large morning coffee once you top it up with hot water or milk. If you’re making for two, a 6-cup is the safer size.

Don’t half-fill a big pot to make less. Moka pots work best when you fill the basket and water to the levels the maker sets, so buy the size you’ll actually use most days.

Who it isn’t for: if you sometimes make one cup and sometimes six, you could end up wanting two pots.

Aluminium vs stainless steel

Aluminium is the classic material. It’s light and heats quickly, and it’s usually cheaper. The Venice and both Moka Express pots here are aluminium. The catch is that aluminium won’t work on induction without a plate, and it’s normally hand-wash only; check the care guidance on your pot.

Stainless steel is heavier and tougher, and it can work on induction if the base is magnetic. The Verona and the Bialetti Venus are steel. Lakeland says the Venus is dishwasher safe.

Who it isn’t for: if you only have gas, the extra cost of stainless steel buys durability rather than better coffee.

Hob compatibility

  • Gas: all five work, according to the listings. Keep the flame under the base so it doesn’t lick up the sides and heat the handle.
  • Electric and ceramic: all five are listed for electric hobs.
  • Induction: only the steel models (Verona and Venus), or an aluminium pot on a conversion plate. Sous Chef sells the Bialetti Induction Plate 13cm at £18.99, checked 3 Oct 2026.

Who it isn’t for: induction owners who don’t want a separate plate should go straight to the steel pots.

Gaskets, filters and spare parts

The rubber gasket that seals the top and bottom halves wears out over time, as can the filter plate. A worn gasket can leak steam or coffee around the join. Replacements are cheap for popular sizes, but they’re size-specific, so check that spares are sold for your exact pot before you buy. Rinse with warm water after each use and let the parts dry apart.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants a no-maintenance brewer. A cafetière is simpler; see our best cafetière guide.

Moka pot vs espresso machine vs AeroPress

A moka pot is cheaper than any espresso machine and needs no counter space. An espresso machine gives you proper espresso and a steam wand for milk. An AeroPress is quicker to clean and better for a single cup. If you’d like to compare methods, our guide to making espresso at home covers all three.

Downsides

  • Not true espresso. It’s strong coffee, but not machine espresso.
  • Induction needs care. Aluminium pots need a plate.
  • Stock varies. The Bialetti Venus was out of stock at Lakeland on 3 Oct 2026.
