Grind pods review: what you get, compatibility and compostability
Grind's plant-based pods fit Nespresso Original machines and Grind says they're certified home-compostable. What's in the range, what they cost direct and at Sainsbury's, and the catches.

This Grind pods review covers the London coffee brand’s plant-based pods for Nespresso Original machines, which Grind says are certified home-compostable. We look at what’s in the range, how the pack sizes compare on price per pod, where to buy them, and the catches. We haven’t tested this in person. Our verdict is based on Grind’s own product and help pages, Sainsbury’s listings, and UK prices checked on 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.

Grind’s product pages say a subscription saves up to 25% and includes free shipping. Subscription terms can change, so check them at checkout.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who doesn’t want a subscription and buys small packs; that’s the most expensive way to buy.
What Grind pods are made from
Grind’s help centre says its pods are made from PHA, a material produced by bacterial fermentation, and that they contain no plastic or aluminium. Its sustainability page says Grind pods were the first in the UK to be certified home-compostable and have an oxygen barrier to keep the coffee fresh.
Grind’s help centre says the pods are TÜV Austria OK compost HOME certified and decompose within 26 weeks in the right conditions, noting that the average UK home compost heap is around 30°C (Grind help: what are Grind pods made from?).
Grind says that if you don’t have a home compost heap, its pods can go in your food waste bin or general waste. Council food waste rules vary, so check with your local council before putting pods in your food caddy.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who already recycles aluminium pods through Podback and is happy with that.
Which machines do Grind pods fit?
Grind says its pods are compatible with original-style Nespresso machines and with its own Grind One pod machine. They won’t fit Nespresso Vertuo machines, which use a different pod. Our guide to Nespresso Vertuo vs Original explains the difference, and our Nespresso CitiZ review covers an Original machine.
Who it isn’t for: Dolce Gusto and Tassimo owners.
The Grind pod range
On 3 Oct 2026, Grind’s site listed these pod blends:
- Core blends: House, Light, Dark, Extra Dark and Long, plus House Decaf and Dark Decaf.
- Edition blends: Edition Dark and Edition Light.
- Flavoured: Caramel, Hazelnut, Vanilla, Mocha, Pistachio, Coconut, Honey Nut, Sweet Miso, Baileys, Pumpkin Spice and Christmas.
Grind describes its House Blend as chocolatey and its Dark Blend as rich and intense. Sainsbury’s carried a smaller selection. We found House Blend and Pistachio on 3 Oct 2026.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants single-country coffees to compare; the range is mostly blends and flavours.
Downsides
- Price per pod. At about 44p to 48p a pod for core blends, Grind costs more than the supermarket aluminium compatibles we’ve compared.
- Composting takes time. Grind says up to 26 weeks in the right conditions, so a cold or small heap may be slower.
- Subscription small print. Grind’s own pages quoted different savings on 3 Oct 2026.
- No owner review summary. We couldn’t check independent owner reviews for this page, so we haven’t summarised them.
