How to descale a Gaggia Brera bean-to-cup
The Gaggia Brera's descaling programme step by step, from Gaggia's own manual: what you need, the selector switch moves, the two rinses and what to do if the cycle is interrupted.

If you want to know how to descale Gaggia Brera machines, the short version is this: a whole bottle of Gaggia descaler, two containers, a few turns of the selector switch and about 35 minutes. The Brera runs most of it for you, but it relies on you turning the side selector at the right moments, which is where most people get stuck. We haven’t tested this in person. The steps below come from Gaggia’s Brera instruction booklet and its Brera product page, which we read on 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.
When the Brera needs descaling
The Brera has a descaling alert. Gaggia says you should descale when the descaling icon shows on the display, and its manual marks the procedure as taking about 35 minutes.
Gaggia’s manual explains that the alert is worked out from how much water the machine has used, and that the software is set up for standard water hardness. It recommends descaling every 1-2 months in some cases even if the machine hasn’t asked, so if your water is hard, it’s worth not waiting for the icon. The troubleshooting table also lists a long warm-up time as a sign that limescale is blocking the circuit.
What you need
- Gaggia descaler. Gaggia says to use only its own descaling solution and never vinegar. Its website also rules out descalers based on mineral acids (sulfuric, hydrochloric or sulfamic acid), which it says can damage the machine’s pipes. The Gaggia Descaler RI9111/60 (250ml) was £5.99 at Cafazzini, checked 3 Oct 2026. See it at Cafazzini. The Brera manual uses the whole bottle.
- Two empty containers: one large one under the coffee spout and one under the steam wand.
- About 35 minutes, during which you shouldn’t switch the machine off or put it on standby.
Before you start
- Take the Pannarello off the steam wand, if your Brera has one.
- Empty the drip tray and put it back.
- Remove the Intenza water filter from the tank if you use one. Gaggia says to take it out before you add descaler.
How to descale Gaggia Brera machines: step by step
The Brera manual uses small icons for the selector positions. Here they are in plain terms. The selector switch on the side has a central position, and turning it clockwise sends water out of the steam wand.
Stage 1: descale
- Put a large container under the coffee spout and turn the machine off with the STAND-BY button. Wait for it to finish its rinse.
- Add the descaler. Pour the whole bottle of Gaggia descaler into the tank and top up with fresh drinking water to MAX. Put the tank back.
- Put containers under both the steam wand and the coffee spout.
- Check the selector switch is in the central position.
- Press and hold both brew buttons together for 3 seconds. This starts the descaling programme, and a blinking light shows it has begun.
- When the indicator lights blink, turn the selector clockwise. The steam wand then dispenses the solution at intervals.
- When the tank is empty, three lights blink together. Turn the selector back to the centre and empty both containers.
Stage 2: rinse twice
- Remove the tank, rinse it and fill it to MAX with fresh drinking water. Put it back. The machine enters the rinse phase.
- Put the empty containers back under the wand and the spout, and turn the selector clockwise when the lights blink.
- When the tank is empty and the three lights blink together, turn the selector to the centre and empty the containers.
- Rinse and refill the tank to MAX a second time. The machine rinses through the coffee spout. When the lights blink, turn the selector clockwise for the second rinse.
- When the second rinse ends, the machine goes into standby. Empty the container under the wand, turn the selector to the centre and refill the tank.
Gaggia notes that the tank must be filled all the way to MAX for each rinse. If it isn’t, part of the rinse has to be repeated.
Finish off. Refit the Pannarello, switch the machine on and let it warm up and rinse as normal. Gaggia then says to wash the brew group, as described in the cleaning chapter of the manual.
Who this isn’t for: owners of Gaggia’s manual espresso machines, which have no programme. See our guide on how to descale Gaggia Classic Pro machines for that method.
What to do if it gets stuck or overflows
- A container is about to overflow. Gaggia says you can pause the process to empty it by turning the selector switch, then restart by turning it again. The booklet shows the pause and start positions as icons, so check yours.
- The machine was switched off part way through. The manual says that next time you switch it on, the cycle has to be repeated from the point where it stopped. Switch on and follow the lights.
- The lights blink straight after you start. The manual covers this. Turn the selector to the right and then back to the centre when all three lights blink.
If the descaling icon stays on after a full cycle, or the machine won’t respond, check the troubleshooting section of your booklet or contact Gaggia support.
How to descale less often: the Intenza filter
Gaggia says the Brera works with the Brita/Mavea Intenza+ water filter, which is designed to protect the machine against scale. The manual’s setup steps:
- Soak the filter upright in cold water and press the sides gently to let out the air bubbles.
- Set the dial on the filter to your water: A for soft, B for medium (standard), C for hard.
- Take out the small white filter that came in the tank and keep it somewhere dry. Put it back if you ever stop using the Intenza.
- Push the Intenza filter into the empty tank, fill with fresh water and run the whole tank through the hot water function.
Remember to remove it again before every descale. We couldn’t confirm a current UK price for the Intenza+ on 3 Oct 2026, so we haven’t quoted one.
