illy Intenso is the dark roast of illy’s coffee, sold in the UK in the familiar 250g cans. If you’ve had illy Classico, Intenso is the same idea pushed further: the same 100% arabica blend, roasted darker. This illy Intenso guide covers how the two differ, which formats you can buy here, which brewers illy lists it for and what it cost on 3 Oct 2026. We haven’t tested this in person. What follows is based on illy UK’s product pages and UK retailer listings and prices checked on 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.

Our illy Classico beans review covers the medium roast in detail, so this page focuses on what changes with Intenso.

illy Intenso review: the short answer

Buy illy Intenso ground if you make espresso at home with a machine that takes ground coffee, and Classico tastes too mild to you, especially in a latte or cappuccino. illy describes it as a bold roast with cocoa and dried-fruit notes and a robust finish. It was £7.99 for 250g at illy UK on 3 Oct 2026.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who enjoys Classico’s lighter, sweeter style. Intenso trades those floral notes for roastiness.

Get Intenso beans if you have a grinder or bean-to-cup machine, but check stock first. illy UK listed 250g of whole-bean Intenso at £7.00 on 3 Oct 2026, but it was out of stock, as was the six-pack.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who needs beans this week. Look at Classico beans instead, or buy the ground can.

Skip Intenso if you’re mainly after value. At around £32 a kilo at full price, it costs well over the supermarket Italian blends we’ve looked at.

How illy Intenso differs from Classico

illy uses one arabica blend and roasts it to different levels. illy’s ingredients list for both the Intenso and Classico ground cans says 100% arabica coffee.

Roast. Classico is illy’s medium roast and Intenso its bold or dark roast. On illy’s own descriptions, the darker roast swaps Classico’s floral notes for cocoa and a more robust finish.

Intensity. illy’s own scale puts Intenso ground at 7 of 9 and Classico ground at 5 of 9.

Flavour. illy describes Intenso as having warm notes of cocoa and dried fruit with a robust finish. Classico, by contrast, gets caramel, orange blossom and jasmine with a sweet aftertaste.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who drinks espresso black and likes it sweet. On illy’s own descriptions, Classico is the gentler of the two.

Formats and what illy Intenso costs

Prices we found on 3 Oct 2026:

  • Intenso ground for espresso, 250g can: £7.99 at illy UK. That’s £31.96 a kilo.
  • Intenso whole bean, 250g can: listed at £7.00 at illy UK but out of stock.
  • illy Espresso Dark Roast ground, 250g: £8.00 at Sainsbury’s. Sainsbury’s lists it as Dark Roast rather than using the Intenso name.

illy UK charges £4.90 delivery on orders under £45, according to its delivery information, so a single can from illy works out dearer than the shelf price suggests. For comparison, Classico ground for espresso was also £7.99 at illy UK on the same day.

We didn’t find Intenso at Morrisons when we searched on 3 Oct 2026, and we couldn’t check Tesco or Ocado, as their sites blocked our check.

Who it isn’t for: anyone buying one can at a time from illy’s own shop, unless you’re topping up to the free-delivery threshold.

Which brewers illy lists Intenso for

Espresso machine. The ground can is labelled for espresso. illy calls it ideal for espresso preparation, so it suits a machine that takes ground coffee, including pressurised-basket machines.

Moka pot. illy’s six-pack listing for Intenso whole beans says they suit moka pots, filter coffee, espresso and lungo. The ground can is only listed for espresso. illy sells a separate Classico ground for moka, so if you want a moka grind from illy, that’s the one we found listed.

Bean-to-cup. Whole beans are the format you’d want, when they’re in stock. Our bean-to-cup machines hub compares machines.

Milk drinks. If Classico tastes thin to you in a latte, Intenso’s fuller, cocoa-led profile, as illy describes it, is the obvious one to try. Our best coffee beans for lattes guide compares other options.

Who it isn’t for: cafetière drinkers. illy doesn’t list the ground can for cafetière, and espresso-ground coffee is too fine for a press.

Downsides

  • Price. Close to £32 a kilo for the ground can at full price.
  • Bean stock. illy UK showed the whole-bean Intenso as out of stock on 3 Oct 2026.
  • Small cans. 250g is the only size we found.
  • Name confusion. Supermarkets may sell it as “Dark Roast” rather than Intenso, so check the label.
  • Delivery charge. illy UK adds £4.90 under £45.
