Philips 3200 vs 3300: the short answer

Get the Philips 3300 LatteGo (EP3347/90) if you want one-touch milky coffee from a mid-range Philips. It costs £30 less than the 3200’s list price, it’s in stock, and Philips UK lists cappuccino and latte macchiato among its drinks, plus SilentBrew with Quiet Mark certification.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants saved user profiles or a long drinks menu. Philips UK lists no profiles on the 3300, and you’d need to look higher up the range, such as the Philips 5400.

Choose the 3300 with a classic frother (EP3326/90) if you’re happy to froth milk yourself and want to save money. It’s £409.99 at Philips UK.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants milk drinks at one touch. The classic frother is a steam wand you use with a jug.

Get the Philips 3200 only if you find it in stock and well below the 3300’s price. On paper it does less.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants a quieter machine or a listed cappuccino button. Philips UK doesn’t list either on the 3200.

Drinks

The drink lists are where the two differ most, and Philips’ own pages are a little inconsistent:

  • 3200 EP3246/70: the headline promises “5 coffee options”, but the spec table lists four pre-programmed drinks: espresso, coffee, espresso lungo and iced coffee, plus hot water.
  • 3300 EP3347/90: the spec table lists five pre-programmed drinks: espresso, coffee, cappuccino, latte macchiato and iced coffee, plus hot water. The feature list calls that “6 hot and refreshing drinks”.
  • 3300 EP3326/90: Philips UK lists espresso, coffee, americano, espresso lungo, iced coffee, hot water and warm milk.

Philips says the 3300’s iced coffee setting brews with a slower flow rate and at a lower temperature, for pouring over ice.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants a flat white or caffè latte button. Neither LatteGo model’s spec table lists one.

Milk

Both the 3200 EP3246/70 and the 3300 EP3347/90 use LatteGo, with a 0.26-litre milk container, according to Philips UK. Philips says LatteGo has two parts and no tubes, and can go in the dishwasher or be rinsed under the tap. It quotes 15 seconds for the 3200 and 10 seconds for the 3300.

The EP3326/90 uses what Philips calls a classic milk frother instead. Philips says it makes thick-frothed milk for cappuccinos or hot milk for hot chocolate.

Who it isn’t for: latte art fans. LatteGo froths for you, and the classic frother is designed for simple froth rather than fine control.

Noise, controls and smart features

Philips UK lists SilentBrew on both 3300 models, which it says makes them 40% quieter than earlier models, with Quiet Mark certification. It doesn’t list SilentBrew on the 3200, though it does say the 3200’s aroma seal reduces grinder noise.

Both have a touch display and Philips’ My Coffee Choice settings for strength and quantity. On the 3300, Philips adds milk froth level.

Currys lists wi-fi and the HomeID app for the 3300 EP3347/90. Philips UK’s spec table says “Connectivity: No” for both machines, though it mentions the HomeID app for recipes and support on the 3300. Check with the retailer if smart features matter to you.

Who it isn’t for: anyone buying the 3300 for app control. The sources disagree.

Grinder, tank and size

On Philips UK’s spec tables, the two share most of their hardware:

  • Grinder: ceramic, 12 settings, on both.
  • Beans and water: 275g bean container and 1.8-litre tank on both.
  • Pump and power: 15 bar and 1500W on both.
  • Size and weight: both are 246mm wide and weigh 8kg, according to Philips UK.
  • Maintenance: both take an AquaClean filter, which Philips says means no descaling for up to 5,000 cups if you change it when prompted.

Who it isn’t for: anyone hoping the 3300 brews differently. The hardware gap is small; the difference is mostly drinks, noise and price.

Who each one suits

  • The 3300 LatteGo suits most people choosing between these two: it’s cheaper, in stock and lists more milk drinks.
  • The 3300 classic frother suits budget buyers happy to steam their own milk.
  • The 3200 suits someone who finds a genuine clearance deal on it.

Downsides

  • 3200: you can’t buy it new right now (out of stock at Philips UK and not listed at Currys), and at £599.99 it’s £30 more at Philips UK than the 3300 LatteGo you can buy today.
  • 3300: the LatteGo model’s extra drinks don’t come with user profiles, and its wi-fi is disputed: Currys lists it, but Philips UK’s spec table says no connectivity.
  • Both: Philips’ drink counts don’t match between its headlines and spec tables.
