Our Magnifica Evo review explains every model code.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who assumes all Evos froth milk for you. The code decides that.

Milk systems

This is the biggest practical difference.

  • Philips 3200: LatteGo, a 0.26-litre milk container that froths and pours milk into your drink, according to Philips UK. Philips says it has two parts and no tubes and can be rinsed under the tap in about 15 seconds or put in the dishwasher.
  • Evo steam wand models (21.B, 22.B, 31.SB): what De’Longhi calls a traditional milk frother, a manual steam wand. You hold the jug and judge the milk yourself.
  • Evo ECAM290.61.SB: Currys lists an automatic frother with a 220ml milk carafe and dishwasher-safe parts including the milk container.
  • Evo ECAM290.83.TB: LatteCrema Hot, according to De’Longhi UK.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who hates washing milk parts. Any carafe needs rinsing after use, and a steam wand needs wiping straight away.

Drinks

  • Philips 3200: the spec table lists four pre-programmed drinks: espresso, coffee, espresso lungo and iced coffee, plus hot water. The headline promises “5 coffee options”.
  • Evo ECAM290.21.B: De’Longhi lists coffee, espresso and long coffee at one touch, plus steam. De’Longhi says the ECAM290.31.SB has 5 one-touch recipes.
  • Evo ECAM290.61.SB: Currys lists cappuccino, coffee, espresso, hot water and MyLatte.

Who it isn’t for: anyone wanting a big menu. Neither lists many drinks; look at the Philips 5400 for that.

Grinder, controls and maintenance

Philips UK lists a ceramic grinder with 12 settings on the 3200, a touch display and My Coffee Choice, with three settings for strength and quantity. It also lists an AquaClean filter, which Philips says means no descaling for up to 5,000 cups, and a removable brew group.

Currys lists 13 grind settings on the Evo ECAM290.61.SB. We couldn’t confirm a grind-setting count for the steam wand Evos. De’Longhi lists a soft touch panel with colour icons on the ECAM290.21.B, and Currys lists three strength settings on the ECAM290.31.SB.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants to fine-tune espresso. Both are built for convenience.

Size and specs

  • Water: 1.8 litres on both (Philips UK; De’Longhi UK for the Evo).
  • Beans: 275g for the 3200 (Philips UK) and 250g for the Evo (Currys).
  • Pump and power: 15 bar on both; 1500W for the 3200 (Philips UK) and 1,450W for the Evo (De’Longhi UK).
  • Weight: 8kg for the 3200 (Philips UK) and 9.44kg for the Evo ECAM290.21.B (De’Longhi UK).
  • Width: 246mm for the 3200 (Philips UK) and 240mm for the Evo ECAM290.31.SB (Currys).

Who it isn’t for: anyone short on worktop space. Both are tall, deep machines, so measure before ordering.

Who each one suits

  • The Magnifica Evo suits most buyers: it’s in stock, cheaper, and there’s a version with a steam wand or a carafe.
  • The Philips 3200 suits anyone who finds one in stock and wants LatteGo and iced coffee.

Downsides

  • Philips 3200: out of stock at Philips UK, not found at Currys, and a short listed menu.
  • Magnifica Evo: confusing model codes, and the cheapest versions froth milk manually.
