How to descale a Dolce Gusto: Genio S, Mini Me and Piccolo XS step by step

Dolce Gusto descaling step by step from the makers' manuals for the Genio S, Mini Me and Piccolo XS, with what you need, how often, and why to skip vinegar.

If you want to know how to descale Dolce Gusto machines, the good news is that every model uses the same basic recipe: half a litre of water mixed with Dolce Gusto descaler, run through the machine, followed by a fresh-water rinse. What changes from model to model is how you start the cycle. We haven’t tested this in person. The steps below are based on the user manuals for the Genio S, Mini Me and Piccolo XS (the Krups-made versions), checked 3 Oct 2026. Always check the manual for your exact model. Read how we compare.

How often to descale

  • Genio S: the manual says to descale every three to four months, and the machine shows a descaling alert after 300 extractions.
  • Piccolo XS: the manual says to descale when the light turns steady orange, or when drinks come out more slowly or less hot than usual.
  • Mini Me: follow the descaling interval in your manual, and descale sooner if drinks slow down.

What you need

  • Nescafé Dolce Gusto descaler. The manuals tell you to use Dolce Gusto liquid descaler. The Piccolo XS and Mini Me manuals both say not to use vinegar for descaling. We couldn’t check Dolce Gusto’s own price on 3 Oct 2026, so check current price.
  • 0.5 litres of water to mix with the descaler in the tank.
  • The rinsing tool that came with your machine (Genio S and Piccolo XS), which sits in the capsule holder during descaling.
  • A large container to catch the liquid, and fresh water for rinsing.

Who it isn’t for: anyone thinking of using vinegar or citric acid. Stick to the descaler your manual names.

These steps follow the Genio S manual.

  1. Fill the tank. Mix 0.5 litres of water with Dolce Gusto liquid descaler in the water tank.
  2. Fit the rinsing tool. Put the rinsing tool in the capsule holder and insert it into the machine.
  3. Place a container under the outlet.
  4. Enter descaling mode. Select the XL drink size, then turn the control ring clockwise four times until the LED blinks.
  5. Start. Press the start/stop button. The machine runs the descaling solution through, with a pause of about two minutes partway through.
  6. Rinse. When the tank is empty, rinse it and refill with fresh water. Empty the container, put it back and press start/stop to run the rinse.
  7. Done. When the rinse finishes, the descaling indicator turns off.

Who it isn’t for: Genio S Plus owners who’ve lost their manual. The steps are similar, but check Nescafé Dolce Gusto’s support pages for your exact model.

These steps follow the Mini Me manual.

  1. Switch off the machine. Fill the tank with 0.5 litres of water mixed with descaler.
  2. Empty the capsule holder and put it back in the machine. Place a container under the outlet.

  4. Enter descaling mode. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds until it blinks green. The Mini Me manual says not to press the power button during the descaling cycle.

  6. Run the second phase. Push the lever to the left. It now runs continuously.
  7. Wait. Let the machine stand for about two minutes.
  8. Rinse. Rinse and refill the tank with fresh water. Push the lever right, then left, to rinse both ways.
  9. Done. The power button turns red when the cycle is complete.

Who it isn’t for: owners of other Dolce Gusto models such as the Infinissima or Esperta. Check your own manual for the sequence.

Tips to keep your Dolce Gusto running well

  • Clean the capsule holder regularly. Coffee and milk residue can build up.
  • Empty and refill the tank often rather than topping up old water.
  • Don’t wait for slow drinks. If drinks run slowly or come out cooler, it’s a sign to descale.

If your machine still runs slowly after descaling, contact Nescafé Dolce Gusto’s customer service.
