Nespresso Lattissima One descaling: how to descale it (and fix the light)

Nespresso Lattissima One descaling from the official manual: what the orange light means, the descaling pipe, the rinse, and why the light can stay on afterwards.

Nespresso Lattissima One descaling is a little more involved than on the simpler Original machines. There’s a descaling pipe to plug in, the cycle takes about 20 minutes, and the machine can lock you out if you leave it too long. We haven’t tested this in person. The steps below come from the Nespresso Lattissima One user manual (EN510, made by De’Longhi), which we read on 3 Oct 2026. Always check the manual that came with your machine. Read how we compare.

Short answer: how to descale a Nespresso Lattissima One

When the orange descaling light blinks, put 100 ml of Nespresso descaling agent in the tank and top up to the descaling mark (about 500 ml). Plug the descaling pipe into the milk connector, put a 1 litre container under the outlet and pipe, then press Espresso. When the Lungo button lights white, rinse the tank, fill to MAX and press Lungo. The machine switches off when it’s done.

Who it isn’t for: owners of the Vertuo Lattissima or Gran Lattissima. They’re different machines, so follow their own manuals.

When the Lattissima One needs descaling

The Lattissima One has an orange descaling light and counts your drinks to decide when to use it. The manual describes three stages:

Descaling light What it means
Blinks orange It’s advisable to descale
Blinks orange quickly Only a few drinks can be made before the machine blocks
Lit orange (steady) Descaling is needed; the machine stops making drinks

The block is there to protect the machine. If it happens, descale straight away or contact Nespresso.

You can set the water hardness so the alert matches your local water. Use the test strip with the manual: dip it in water for 1 second and count the red squares. Then remove the milk jug, switch the machine on and hold the milk drink button for 3 seconds to enter Menu mode. Press Espresso, then within 15 seconds press the button that matches your hardness level, as shown in the manual’s table. The buttons blink three times to confirm.

What you need

  • 100 ml of Nespresso descaling agent (one pouch). The manual warns that using an unsuitable descaling agent can damage the machine or leave it badly descaled. We couldn’t check Nespresso’s own prices on 3 Oct 2026, because its site blocked our check, and Currys didn’t list a Nespresso descaling kit when we searched that day.
  • Fresh drinking water to fill to the descaling mark and then to MAX.
  • A container that holds at least 1 litre, big enough to sit under both the coffee outlet and the descaling pipe.
  • About 20 minutes, which is Nespresso’s estimate.

The descaling solution can be harmful. Keep it off your eyes, skin and worktops.

How to descale a Nespresso Lattissima One: step by step

  1. Wait for the alert. Descale when the orange descaling light blinks while the machine is ready.
  2. Eject the capsule. Lift and close the lever to drop any capsule into the container.
  3. Empty and fill. Empty the drip tray and used capsule container. Pour 100 ml of Nespresso descaling agent into the water tank, then add water up to the descaling mark (about 500 ml). Nespresso says to stick to these amounts so the cycle completes.
  4. Fit the descaling pipe. Take the pipe from the back of the machine and plug it into the Rapid Cappuccino System connector, where the milk jug normally goes.
  5. Check it’s in descaling mode. The orange light blinks throughout, and the Espresso button lights white.
  6. Place the container. Stand a 1 litre container under both the coffee outlet and the descaling pipe.
  7. Start descaling. Press the Espresso button. The solution runs through the coffee outlet, the descaling pipe and the drip tray in turn. When the tank is empty, the Lungo button lights white.
  8. Prepare the rinse. Empty the capsule container, drip tray and 1 litre container. Rinse the water tank and fill it with fresh drinking water up to MAX.
  9. Rinse. Press the Lungo button. The rinse runs through the same three routes until the tank is empty, with the Lungo button blinking.
  10. Finish. The machine switches off when rinsing is done. Remove and store the descaling pipe, empty the drip tray and capsule container, rinse the tank and refill it. Wipe the machine with a damp cloth.

Why the descaling light stays on

The manual says the whole procedure must be completed. If it isn’t, the machine stays blocked. If the light is still on afterwards, these are the likely causes it covers:

  • The cycle didn’t finish. Run the procedure again from the start, using the right amount of descaler and water.
  • The orange light blinks and the Espresso button is white. The machine is still in descaling mode. Press Espresso to start.
  • The orange light is steady and no drinks will start. The scale level is too high, so the machine must be descaled.
  • The descaling and cleaning lights blink together. You’re in Menu mode. Hold the milk button for 3 seconds or wait 30 seconds to leave it.

For any blinking pattern the manual doesn’t describe, it says to call Nespresso or send the machine for repair. You also can’t enter Menu mode while the descaling pipe is plugged in.

Tips to descale less often

  • Set your water hardness so the alert isn’t triggered earlier or later than needed.
  • Clean the milk system. Rinsing after each milk drink is a separate job from descaling, but the manual lists both as fixes for poor milk froth.
  • Wipe, don’t soak. Never put the machine in water. Clean it with a damp cloth.

Downsides

  • The machine blocks drinks if you put off descaling too long.
  • The pipe and the three outlets make this messier than on simpler models.
  • We couldn’t confirm the UK price of Nespresso’s descaling agent.

FAQ

How long does Lattissima One descaling take? About 20 minutes, according to Nespresso.

Where does the descaling pipe go? It’s stored at the back of the machine and plugs into the Rapid Cappuccino System connector.

Can you use vinegar? The manual warns that an unsuitable descaling agent can damage the machine, and it specifies Nespresso’s own. We’d stick to that.

Why won’t the machine make drinks? A steady orange descaling light means it’s blocked until you descale.

Is there a descaling button on the Nespresso Lattissima One? No separate one. Once the machine is in descaling mode, with the descaling pipe fitted, you press the Espresso button to start descaling and the Lungo button to start the rinse.

Are the De’Longhi and Nespresso Lattissima One descaling instructions the same? Yes. The Lattissima One (EN510) is made by De’Longhi and sold as a Nespresso machine, and the manual we used is also on De’Longhi’s download server.

How often should you descale a Lattissima One? When the orange descaling light blinks. The machine counts drinks to decide, and you can set your water hardness so the alert matches your local water.
