How to recycle Tassimo pods: Podback and the options in the UK
Tassimo T DISCs can't go in your household recycling bin, but they can be recycled free through Podback. Here's which bag to use, where to take them and what to do step by step.

If you want to know how to recycle Tassimo pods in the UK, the answer is Podback, the free pod recycling service that Tassimo helped to set up. Used T DISCs go in a green Podback bag, not your household recycling bin, and you drop them at a supermarket or council recycling centre, or put them out for kerbside collection if your council offers it. You don’t need to empty out the coffee. We haven’t tested this in person. This guide is based on Tassimo UK’s recycling pages and Podback’s own site and FAQs, read on 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.
How to recycle Tassimo pods in the UK: the short answer
- Collect used T DISCs in a green Podback bag (or any container, if you’re going to a council recycling centre).
- Drain any liquid out first, especially from milk pods.
- Use Podback’s Recycle Checker to find your nearest drop-off point, or to sign up for kerbside collection.
- Drop off the sealed bag, or tip the pods loose into the Podback container at your recycling centre.
Who it isn’t for: anyone hoping to put T DISCs in the household recycling bin. Podback’s collections only work through its own bags and drop-off points.
Why T DISCs need their own scheme
A used T DISC isn’t one material. Tassimo says used pods are separated into aluminium, plastic and coffee grounds during recycling. Podback explains that because pods are small and still contain coffee, they need a dedicated system rather than household recycling.
Podback was created for exactly this. It was set up by Nestlé and Jacobs Douwe Egberts, the company behind Tassimo, and launched in 2021. On 3 Oct 2026, its site said:
- It’s free to use and not-for-profit, funded by its 28 member brands.
- It has more than 1,500 drop-off points across the UK.
- 51% of UK households can recycle pods at a local council recycling centre.
- It covers the whole UK, including Northern Ireland, but not the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
Tassimo describes itself as a founding partner of Podback.
Which bag Tassimo pods go in
Podback sorts pods by material:
- Green bag: plastic pods, including Tassimo and Nescafé Dolce Gusto.
- White bag: aluminium pods, such as Nespresso and Nespresso-compatible capsules.
Tassimo pods go in the green bag. You can mix different brands in one bag as long as they’re the same material, so Tassimo and Dolce Gusto pods can share a green bag. Don’t add aluminium Nespresso capsules, though. If you use both, Podback suggests setting up a second account with a different email to get the second type of bag.
Podback says a drop-off bag usually holds about 60 Tassimo T DISCs. Tassimo asks you to fill it only to the dotted line.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants to use a carrier bag instead. Tassimo says used pods are only accepted in Podback bags, because the bags are built to survive the journey to the recycling plant. The one exception is a council recycling centre, where you tip the pods in loose.
Where to get Podback bags
- With a Tassimo order: Tassimo says it adds Podback bags to every order from its website, enough to cover the pods you’ve bought.
- From Podback: create a free account through the Recycle Checker and order them.
- In store: Podback lists Morrisons customer service desks, Costa Coffee baristas in Tesco (for a limited period) and online orders from Ocado.
Where to take them
Start with Podback’s Recycle Checker. Choose Tassimo as your machine, choose your pods and enter your postcode. It shows the options near you:
- Morrisons: drop your sealed bag in the Podback point, usually near the entrance or checkouts.
- Asda toYou: print a label for each bag at the blue drop box. Choose Podback, then “Podback Plastic” for Tassimo pods.
- Council recycling centres: no bag needed. Tip the pods loose into the Podback container.
- Kerbside collection: if your council offers it, sign up through the Recycle Checker. You’ll get two rolls of bags (26 in total), usually within 10 working days. Only Podback’s kerbside bags are collected.
- No drop-off near you: Podback may offer a return through InPost Shops instead, using a code it emails you. InPost lockers can’t be used.
Step by step: a simple routine at home
- Keep a green bag near the machine. Pop each used T DISC in once it’s cooled.
- Drain milk and drink pods. Tassimo specifically mentions its milk pods. Tip out any leftover liquid so the bag doesn’t leak.
- Leave the coffee in. Podback and Tassimo both say there’s no need to empty pods. The grounds are removed at the recycling plant.
- Fill to the dotted line, then use the grip seal and adhesive strip to close the bag.
- Drop it off next time you shop, or put it out on your kerbside collection day.
What happens to them next
Podback and Tassimo say the pods are shredded to remove the coffee, then the materials are recycled in the UK. Recycled plastic is used for products such as building materials and packaging crates, and aluminium for drink cans and car parts. The coffee grounds go to anaerobic digestion, which makes biogas and a soil improver. Even the Podback bags are recycled.
What about the box and other packaging?
The Podback scheme covers the used pods themselves. For the outer box and any wrapping, check the recycling label printed on the pack and your council’s rules. Don’t put used T DISCs back in the box to recycle with your cardboard.
