Do illy pods fit Nespresso? illy Iperespresso, X-CAPS and compatibles compared
illy sells three kinds of capsule in the UK: Iperespresso and X-CAPS for its own machines, and capsules for Nespresso Original machines. Which fits what, and prices checked 3 Oct 2026.
If you’re weighing up illy pods vs Nespresso, the first thing to know is that “illy pods” can mean three different things. illy sells Iperespresso capsules and newer X-CAPS capsules for its own machines, plus capsules made to fit Nespresso Original machines. Below we explain which fits what, how the prices compare, and who should choose which. We haven’t tested this in person. This comparison is based on illy UK’s product pages, Sainsbury’s listings, Podback’s guidance and prices checked on 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.
Quick answer: some do. illy sells capsules made for Nespresso Original machines, which fit most Original models (illy lists exceptions, including some U, Expert and Prodigio machines bought after 25 July 2016). illy’s Iperespresso and X-CAPS capsules are separate systems for illy’s own machines, and won’t fit a Nespresso machine.
illy pods vs Nespresso: the short answer
Choose illy’s Nespresso-compatible capsules if you already own a Nespresso Original machine and like illy coffee. A 10-pack of Classico was £5.35 at illy UK, checked 3 Oct 2026, and you keep the freedom to buy other brands’ pods too.
Who it isn’t for: Vertuo owners, and owners of some newer Original models; see the exceptions below.
Choose an illy Iperespresso or X-CAPS machine only if you want to drink illy coffee almost all the time. Those capsules only fit illy’s own machines, and we only found them sold direct from illy.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants to pick up pods in the supermarket or switch brands.
Stick with Nespresso’s own pods if you want Nespresso’s range and its own recycling service. We couldn’t check Nespresso UK’s capsule prices on 3 Oct 2026, because its site blocked our check.
The three kinds of illy capsule
illy capsules for Nespresso Original machines
illy UK sells these as “compatible capsules” in Classico, Intenso, Forte, Classico Lungo, Decaf and a Brasile Arabica Selection. illy’s product page for Classico says they’re 100% arabica and suit Nespresso Original machines, and that illy isn’t affiliated with Nespresso.
There’s an important catch. illy says these capsules aren’t compatible with Nespresso U, Umilk, Expert, Expert&Milk, Prodigio and Prodigio&Milk machines bought after 25 July 2016. Check your model before you buy.
Who it isn’t for: owners of the Nespresso models illy lists as exceptions.
illy Iperespresso capsules
Iperespresso is illy’s own capsule system, sold for illy’s Iperespresso machines such as the X1 and Y3.3. illy UK listed Classico, Intenso, Forte, Decaf, Guatemala and two filter-style Americano capsules on 3 Oct 2026.
Who it isn’t for: anyone with a Nespresso machine; these capsules are a different system.
illy X-CAPS capsules
X-CAPS is illy’s newer capsule system, for its X-CAPS machines. illy says X-CAPS capsules use 85% recycled aluminium. illy UK listed Classico, Intenso, Forte, Decaf and Classico Lungo X-CAPS on 3 Oct 2026. For the X3 X-CAPS machine, check price at illy UK.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who doesn’t want to buy a new machine.
Machine lock-in
This is the biggest difference between the options:
- illy’s Nespresso-compatible capsules go in a machine you may already own, alongside pods from Nespresso, L’OR, Starbucks and supermarket brands.
- Iperespresso and X-CAPS need an illy machine made for that system, and we found the capsules sold only by illy.
- Nespresso Original machines take Nespresso’s own pods plus a wide range of compatibles. Nespresso Vertuo machines are a separate, closed system; our guide to Nespresso Vertuo vs Original explains the difference.
Who it isn’t for: if you like to shop around on price, an illy-only machine will feel restrictive.

Who it isn’t for: anyone choosing purely on cost; every illy format worked out at roughly twice the cheapest compatibles.
Recycling
Podback’s FAQ says aluminium pods, including Nespresso, Nespresso-compatible and illy X-CAPS, go in its white bag, and its drop-off bag guide includes illy Iperespresso pods (Podback FAQs). illy’s product page says used compatible capsules can be disposed of according to local recycling guidelines, so check with your council too.
Who should choose which
- You own a Nespresso Original machine: consider illy’s compatible capsules, but check your model against illy’s exceptions first.
- You’re buying a machine and only drink illy: an Iperespresso or X-CAPS machine keeps things simple, but you’ll buy capsules from illy.

Do illy pods fit Nespresso Vertuo machines? No. illy’s compatible capsules are made for Nespresso Original machines. Vertuo is a separate system that reads a barcode on Nespresso’s own Vertuo pods.
Does Morrisons sell illy coffee? Yes. When we checked on 23 Oct 2026, Morrisons listed illy Espresso Ground Coffee (250g, £8.00) and illy Instant Coffee Smooth Taste (95g). For illy’s Nespresso-compatible capsules, we found them at Sainsbury’s and illy UK.
