Kenco Gold Indulgence review: the branded instant the taste panels rated

Want a Kenco Gold Indulgence review that covers the big taste tests? This is it. It’s the Kenco jar the testers actually rated, and it came out as Good Housekeeping’s top branded instant in August 2026. The 195g jar was £7.80 at Tesco, price at time of research (28 Sep 2026). I haven’t tested this in person. My verdict is based on the listed product details, dated UK prices, owner ratings and the independent tests I name and link below.

Kenco Gold Indulgence review: the short answer

Buy Kenco Gold Indulgence if you want a darker, richer instant with a proper taste-test result behind it. Good Housekeeping’s panel named it their “Best branded buy”, and owners on Trolley.co.uk rate it 4.7 out of 5 from 147 reviews (checked 28 Sep 2026). At £7.80 at Tesco (price at time of research, 28 Sep 2026), it works out at about £4.00 per 100g.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who mainly wants the lowest price per 100g. Nescafé Gold Blend was £5.75 at Asda (price at time of research, 28 Sep 2026), about £3.03 per 100g, and it did well in Which?’s blind test too.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants the independent evidence. Neither Which? nor Good Housekeeping included Kenco Smooth, so Gold Indulgence is the Kenco jar with the test results.

Prices for the 195g jar, via Trolley.co.uk:

• Tesco: £7.80, price at time of research (28 Sep 2026). Trolley.co.uk’s price history suggests it usually sells for a little more, but no formal was-price was shown, so it could move either way.
• Sainsbury’s: £8.35, price at time of research (28 Sep 2026). I couldn’t confirm a Nectar price.
• Amazon UK: Check current price at Amazon UK. No price was showing on the product page when it was checked.

I couldn’t confirm prices at Asda or Morrisons, and Trolley.co.uk wasn’t showing any multi-buy deals. I also couldn’t confirm any Tesco Clubcard or Morrisons More Card price at the time of research. Which? suggests watching for offers on this jar, so it’s worth checking before you pay full price.

What you get: the jar and what’s listed

Gold Indulgence is a freeze-dried instant made from a blend of medium and dark roast beans, according to its Trolley.co.uk and Amazon listings. It comes in a 195g glass jar, as Tesco lists it. Kenco’s maker is Jacobs Douwe Egberts.

Tesco’s listing gives a serving as 1.6g and says the brand claims about 121 servings per jar. Kenco’s own tasting notes point towards a smooth cup with a sweet, dessert-like edge. That’s the brand talking, so I’d lean on the taste tests below. Tesco’s listing also says the beans are responsibly sourced under JDE Peet’s Common Grounds programme; that’s a brand claim, and I haven’t looked into the scheme.

Box contents are simple: one jar.

Running costs: per 100g and per cup

By my sums on the 195g jar:

• about £4.00 per 100g at Tesco (£7.80, price at time of research, 28 Sep 2026)
• about £4.28 per 100g at Sainsbury’s (£8.35, price at time of research, 28 Sep 2026)

On the brand’s claim of about 121 servings a jar, the Tesco price works out at roughly 6.4p a cup. Which? points out that this assumes a 1.6g serving, which is a fairly weak cup, so if you like yours stronger, each cup costs more.

For comparison, Kenco Smooth’s 200g jar was £7.80 at Tesco (£3.90 per 100g) and Nescafé Gold Blend’s 190g jar was £5.75 at Asda (about £3.03 per 100g), both prices at time of research (28 Sep 2026).

Who it isn’t for: anyone who spoons generously and watches the budget closely. The per-cup figure climbs quickly with a stronger brew.

What the taste tests say

This is where Gold Indulgence stands out. Good Housekeeping’s instant coffee test, published 3 Aug 2026, named it the “Best branded buy”. Its panel scored it 85/100, making it the top branded jar and level with the overall winner, Asda’s Exceptional Brazilian. The panel picked out a strong smell, a deep roast and malty, dark-chocolate flavours.

Which? also included it in its January 2026 blind test. Tasters there liked its look, aroma and flavour, though some wanted it a little stronger. It didn’t pick up an award: the Best Buys went to M&S Gold and Waitrose Gold Roast, and Aldi’s gold instant was named Great Value.

I also looked for tests from BBC Good Food, The Independent, The Guardian’s Filter and T3, and didn’t find one covering it.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who only trusts a Which? Best Buy. Gold Indulgence didn’t get one, and the M&S and Waitrose own-label jars did.

What owners say

Owner ratings are strong. On Trolley.co.uk, it has 4.7 out of 5 from 147 reviews across three shops, and on Amazon UK it has 4.4 out of 5 from 46 ratings (both checked 28 Sep 2026). That’s a decent sample for a jar of instant, and it lines up with the panel results.

I’d treat star ratings as backup for the taste tests rather than the main reason to buy.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants detailed owner feedback on strength or flavour. The ratings are positive, but they’re scores, not tasting notes.

• No Which? award. Own-label jars from M&S and Waitrose took the Best Buys.
• Some tasters wanted more strength. Which? reported that some of its panel wanted it stronger.
• The per-cup maths is generous. The 121-servings claim assumes a weak 1.6g cup, as Which? notes.
• Price gaps. I couldn’t confirm Ocado, Amazon, Asda or Morrisons prices, or any loyalty-card offer.
