Krups Sensation calc mode: how to descale, step by step
What the calc warning means on a Krups Sensation bean-to-cup machine and how to run the descale cycle, from Krups' own instructions.

If the Krups Sensation calc icon has appeared on your machine, it’s asking to be descaled. The cycle is built in, takes about 20 minutes and needs a descaling sachet, a large container and a little attention at the halfway point. The Sensation range uses model numbers starting EA91, such as the EA910E40. We haven’t tested this in person. Everything below comes from Krups’ UK instructions for the EA91 range, read on 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.
Krups Sensation calc: the short answer
- Take out the Claris water filter if you use one.
- Fill the tank to the CALC mark with lukewarm water and add one sachet of Krups descaler.
- Put a container of at least 1.5 litres under both spouts.
- Start the descale from “Clean Mode” and press START/STOP.
- When prompted, rinse the tank, fill it to MAX and let the rinse run.
Who it isn’t for: owners of other Krups ranges, such as the Intuition. Their menus differ, so check your own manual.
What the calc warning means
According to the manual, the light strip turns solid red when maintenance is due, and the calc icon shows when the machine needs descaling. While a maintenance programme is running, the strip blinks red.
You can put it off, but the alert stays until you descale. Krups also says the descale function isn’t available if too few drinks have been made. How quickly the warning comes back depends mainly on how much steam and hot water you use, so if you mostly make black coffee, you may see it less often.
Who it isn’t for: if the strip is red but the calc icon isn’t showing, the machine may want a different job, such as cleaning. Check the icon first.
What you need
- Krups descaler. The manual asks for one sachet of Krups F054 descaler. The two-sachet pack with a water hardness tester (F054001B) was £4.80 at Krups UK, checked 3 Oct 2026, but it was shown as unavailable at the time. See it at Krups UK
- A container that holds 1.5 litres, wide enough to sit under both the coffee spout and the steam outlet.
- About 20 minutes, and a sponge to clean the tank.
The F054 product page says to dilute the sachet in 500ml of water. For the machine’s descale cycle, follow the machine manual instead, which says to fill the tank to the CALC mark.
How to run the Krups Sensation calc cycle
These are the steps from Krups’ instructions, in our own words:
- Remove the filter. If a Claris Aqua Filter is fitted, take it out of the tank.
- Mix the solution. Fill the tank with lukewarm water up to the CALC mark, add one sachet of descaler, stir to dissolve and refit the tank.
- Place the container. Put your 1.5-litre container under the coffee spout and steam outlet together.
- Start the programme. Open “Clean Mode”, choose descale and press START/STOP. Solution runs out of both outlets. In the first phase it’s normal for no water to appear.
- Rinse the tank. When the light flashes, empty any solution left in the tank, clean it with a sponge, dry it, fill it to MAX with fresh water and refit it.
- Let the rinse run. Empty the container and put it back. The machine rinses itself.
- Finish. Three beeps mean the programme is done. Empty the container and the drip tray.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants to skip the rinse. The manual treats it as part of the programme.
If the descale stops halfway
If the machine is unplugged or loses power mid-cycle, Krups says the programme restarts from the beginning when it comes back on, and the rinse is mandatory. Keep the solution handy so you can carry on.
How to see the calc warning less often
- Use a Claris filter. The manual says to change it every 2 months.
- Or use low-mineral bottled water. Krups suggests bottled water with a dry residue under 800 mg per litre as an alternative to the filter.
- Use the hardness tester in the F054001B pack to understand your water.
Descaling versus cleaning
Descaling clears limescale from the water circuit. Krups’ cleaning tablets (XS3000) are for a separate cleaning programme that deals with coffee residue. If the machine asks for both, they’re two different jobs.
Downsides to know about
- Stock. The Krups descaler pack was shown as unavailable on Krups UK on 3 Oct 2026, with stock expected on 5 Oct.
- Two outlets. Solution comes out of the coffee spout and steam outlet together, so a small cup won’t do.
- No vinegar in the manual. Krups asks for its own descaler, so we haven’t suggested alternatives.
