Costa coffee beans: which blends you can buy for home
Costa's supermarket whole beans compared: Signature Blend, Intensely Dark Amazonian and the 1kg Intense Amazonian bag, with strength, beans used and prices checked on 3 Oct 2026.

Costa coffee beans for home come in three main whole-bean bags in UK supermarkets: the medium Mocha Italia Signature Blend, the darker Amazonian blend in a 200g bag, and a 1kg bag of the Amazonian blend for bean-to-cup machines. This guide sets out what’s in each bag, according to the pack, and what they cost on 3 Oct 2026. We haven’t tested this in person. Pack details come from retailer product pages, and prices from checks at Morrisons and Sainsbury’s on 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.
The beans are made for Costa under licence. The packs list All About Food Limited of Manchester as the producer, under licence from Costa Limited.
Costa coffee beans: the three bags
Mocha Italia Signature Blend (strength 3)
This is Costa’s signature blend, the one it describes as rich and nutty with caramel notes. It’s marked strength 3, medium, and sold as whole beans for grinding in a 200g pouch.
It was £3.50 at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026 (£17.50 a kilo). At Sainsbury’s it was £4.95, checked 3 Oct 2026.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who likes a very dark, bitter espresso. It’s Costa’s middle-of-the-road blend.
Intensely Dark Amazonian Blend (strength 5)
This is the darker one. Costa says it combines Colombian and Brazilian arabica with Vietnamese robusta, slow-roasted for caramel and dark chocolate notes. It’s marked strength 5 out of 6.
It was £3.50 for 200g at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026. Sainsbury’s lists a 200g Intense Amazonian Blend bag at £4.95, checked 3 Oct 2026.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants an all-arabica coffee. This one includes robusta.
Intense Amazonian Blend 1kg (strength 5)
The same Amazonian flavour profile on the pack (dark chocolate, caramel and toasted nuts, strength 5 of 6) in a 1kg bag. The pack labels it for at-home bean-to-cup machines.
It was £19.95 at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026. Note that’s £19.95 a kilo, which is more per kilo than the 200g bags at £17.50 a kilo. The big bag isn’t the cheaper way to buy, at least at Morrisons on the day we checked.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who gets through coffee slowly. The pack says to use the beans within two weeks of opening, and a kilo takes most people longer than that.
How Costa’s strength numbers work
Costa puts a strength number on each bag. The dark Amazonian packs read “Strength 5/6”, so the scale runs to 6, with the Signature Blend at 3, labelled medium. The number describes how dark and intense the roast tastes, not how much caffeine is in the cup, so a strength 5 bag isn’t necessarily more caffeinated than a strength 3.
Use it to choose between Costa’s own bags. Other brands use their own scales (Segafredo’s runs to 13, for example), so the numbers don’t compare across brands.
Who it isn’t for: anyone choosing between brands. Compare the pack’s flavour notes instead.
Is the 1kg bag worth it?
Usually you’d expect a 1kg bag to work out cheaper. On our Morrisons check it didn’t:
- 5 x 200g bags of Intensely Dark Amazonian: £17.50 in total
- 1 x 1kg Intense Amazonian bag: £19.95
So unless you specifically want one big bag, five small ones cost less and stay fresher, because you open one at a time. The pack advice for all three bags is to keep them airtight, refrigerate once opened and use within two weeks.
If price per kilo is what matters most, our best value coffee beans guide compares cheaper 1kg bags.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who drinks a lot of coffee and wants fewer bags to buy. Then the convenience may be worth the extra.
Which Costa beans suit which machine?
- Bean-to-cup machine: the 1kg Intense Amazonian bag is labelled for these, but any of the three will go in a bean-to-cup hopper. See our bean-to-cup machines hub.
- Espresso machine with a grinder: the Signature Blend pack gives espresso instructions: grind about two tablespoons, add to the machine handle and run the cycle.
- Cafetière or filter: Costa also sells a Dark Amazonian Blend already ground for cafetière and filter, at £3.50 for 200g at Morrisons, checked 3 Oct 2026, if you don’t own a grinder.
- Pod machines: Costa makes pods too. Our Costa coffee pods page covers those.
Who it isn’t for: anyone without a grinder or bean-to-cup machine. Whole beans need grinding first.

Downsides
- The 1kg bag costs more per kilo than the 200g bags at Morrisons on 3 Oct 2026.
- Robusta in the dark blend. Fine if you like strong coffee, not if you want all arabica.
- Short shelf life once opened. The pack says to use within two weeks.
