Cru Kafé pods: the organic Nespresso-compatible range explained

What's in the Cru Kafé pod range, what the organic and Fairtrade claims mean, what pods cost per cup from its own shop today, and how to recycle them.

Cru Kafé pods are organic, Fairtrade-certified coffee capsules made to fit Nespresso Original machines, sold through the brand’s own UK shop. This page explains what’s in the range, what the certification claims mean in practice, what Cru Kafé pods cost per cup when we checked on 3 Oct 2026, and how to recycle them. We haven’t tested this in person. Everything here comes from Cru Kafé’s own product pages, the Podback recycling scheme and UK prices we checked on the date shown. Read how we compare.

Cru Kafé says it isn’t connected with Nestlé or Nespresso. “Compatible” means the pods are designed to fit Nespresso Original machines, not that Nespresso makes or endorses them.

Cru Kafé pods: the short answer

Buy Cru Kafé pods if you have a Nespresso Original machine (such as the CitiZ or Essenza Mini) and want every pod to be both organic and Fairtrade certified, in aluminium capsules that go through the Podback scheme.

Who it isn’t for: anyone with a Vertuo machine. Vertuo uses a different capsule shape, and these won’t fit.

Choose the subscription if you get through a box a week or more. At 12 boxes it works out at about 33p a pod, against about 55p for a single box.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who only drinks the odd espresso. Single boxes avoid committing to a delivery schedule.

What’s in the Cru Kafé pod range

Cru Kafé’s pod pages list seven core coffees, each sold in boxes of ten. The origins below are the ones Cru Kafé gives on each product listing; the descriptions are our summary of its own tasting notes.

  • Espresso: an Arabica and Robusta blend from Honduras, Ethiopia and India, described as chocolatey with caramel notes. It’s the only one in the core range Cru Kafé says includes Robusta.
  • Colombian: a single origin, described as full-bodied with fruit and berry notes.
  • Lungo: a blend made for a longer pour, with chocolate, cereal and tart fruit in the description.
  • Ristretto: an India and Sumatra blend for short, strong shots, described as spicy and earthy.
  • Bright Roast: three Arabicas from Peru, Indonesia and Ethiopia, pitched as the fruitier, lighter option.
  • Decaf: a Peruvian coffee with a malty, smooth description.
  • Half Caff: a blend from Peru, Honduras and Colombia that Cru Kafé says has half the caffeine of its standard coffees.

Cru Kafé also sells a mixed Discovery Box and a low-caffeine bundle combining Decaf and Half Caff. The Discovery Box was listed as out of stock when we checked, so we haven’t priced it.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants flavoured pods (vanilla, caramel and so on). We didn’t see any in the core range.

Organic and Fairtrade: what the claims mean

Cru Kafé’s product pages say it only buys coffee that is both organic and Fairtrade certified. In plain terms, organic certification covers how the coffee is farmed, including limits on synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, while Fairtrade certification covers minimum prices and an extra premium paid to producer groups. They’re separate schemes run by different bodies.

What certification doesn’t tell you is how a coffee tastes. That comes down to the beans, the roast and how fresh the pod is, which is why we’ve kept the range descriptions to what Cru Kafé says rather than making claims of our own.

Who it isn’t for: anyone choosing purely on price. Certified organic and Fairtrade pods usually cost more than supermarket own-brand compatibles.

What Cru Kafé pods cost

On Cru Kafé’s UK shop, checked 3 Oct 2026:

  • Single box of 10: £5.49 at Cru Kafé, about 55p a pod by our sums.
  • 160-pod saver pack: £67.99 at Cru Kafé, about 42p a pod.
  • 320-pod saver pack: £124.99 at Cru Kafé, about 39p a pod. The shop shows this against £175.68.
  • Subscription, 6 boxes (60 pods): £24.00 at Cru Kafé, 40p a pod, as the shop states.
  • Subscription, 12 boxes (120 pods): £40.00 at Cru Kafé, which the shop puts at 33p a pod.

The subscription includes free UK delivery, which Cru Kafé says normally costs £3.99, and you can mix and match coffees. One-off orders over £40 also get free UK delivery, according to the site banner.

We also looked at Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Ocado and Waitrose, but all four blocked our check, so we can’t confirm supermarket stock or prices. If you spot Cru Kafé on a shelf, compare the per-pod price with the figures above.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants to pick pods up with the weekly shop at a known price. We couldn’t confirm supermarket pricing.

Recycling Cru Kafé pods

Cru Kafé’s pods are aluminium, and the outer box is cardboard. The brand says it was the first independent coffee company to join Podback, the UK pod recycling scheme, and it offers a free Podback bag with orders. Its Podback announcement says it moved production to the UK in 2018, having previously used plastic pods made in Italy.

Podback says aluminium pods, including Nespresso-compatible ones, go in its white bag, and a drop-off bag holds about 120 Nespresso-sized pods. You either drop the bag at a participating shop or take pods loose to a recycling centre with a Podback container. Use Podback’s Recycle Checker to see what’s available near you.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants home-compostable pods. Cru Kafé has chosen aluminium, and says why on its site.

Alternatives to consider

If organic certification isn’t essential, Dualit’s aluminium capsules are another Nespresso-compatible option, covered in our Dualit coffee pods guide. For a wider look at pod systems and running costs, see our capsule coffee hub and the pod machines section.
