How to descale a Nespresso Creatista machine

Nespresso Creatista descaling for the Creatista Plus, Pro and Uno, from the official manuals: the on-screen alert, the lockout count-down, the menu and the Uno button sequence.

Nespresso Creatista descaling works differently depending on which model you have. The Creatista Plus and Creatista Pro guide you through it on screen, while the Creatista Uno uses a button sequence and a row of lights. All three take about 15 minutes and will eventually stop making drinks if you ignore the alert. We haven’t tested this in person. This guide is based on Sage’s UK manual for the Creatista Pro (SNE900), Sage’s European manual for the Creatista Plus (BNE800) and Breville’s manual for the Creatista Uno (BNE500), all read on 3 Oct 2026. Always check the manual for your own machine. Read how we compare.

Short answer: how to descale a Nespresso Creatista

  • Creatista Plus: turn the dial to MAINTENANCE, select DESCALE and follow the on-screen prompts.
  • Creatista Pro: open the Menu on the touchscreen, select Descale and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Creatista Uno: with the machine off, hold Ristretto and Steam together for 5 seconds, then press either button to start.

Use only Nespresso’s descaling kit, which is what all three manuals specify.

Who it isn’t for: owners of the Vertuo Creatista. It’s a different machine on the Vertuo system, so follow its own manual.

When a Creatista needs descaling

  • Creatista Plus and Pro: the machine shows a “Descale Now” alert on screen. If you keep using it, a lockout count-down appears showing how many uses are left. The Creatista Pro UK manual says it stops after 30 uses. The Sage manual for the Plus we read says 10 uses, though another English version says 30. Either way, don’t wait.
  • Creatista Uno: the descale alert light flashes when descaling is due. If you carry on, it stays on and the machine won’t work until you descale.

How soon the alert comes depends on your water hardness and how much you use the machine. The manuals give these intervals, counted in 40 ml cups:

Water hardness setting Descale after
Softest (under 50 mg/l calcium carbonate) 2,200 cups
Over 70 mg/l 1,800 cups
Over 130 mg/l 1,400 cups
Over 250 mg/l 1,000 cups
Hardest (over 380 mg/l) 600 cups

The Plus and Pro call these levels 0 to 4, while the Uno calls them 1 to 5.

What you need

  • Nespresso descaling liquid. Each manual says never to use any other product, to avoid damaging the machine. We couldn’t check Nespresso’s own prices on 3 Oct 2026, because its site blocked our check.
  • Fresh drinking water. The Uno manual specifies 500 ml in the tank with the descaler. The Plus and Pro screens tell you what to do.
  • A container that holds at least 1 litre. On the Uno, it needs to sit under both the coffee outlet and the steam wand.
  • About 15 minutes.

The descaling solution can be harmful. Keep it away from your eyes, skin and worktops.

How to descale the Creatista Plus and Pro

The Plus and Pro manuals don’t print every step, because the machine walks you through them. The routes are:

  1. Creatista Plus: rotate the dial to MAINTENANCE, select DESCALE, then follow the prompts.
  2. Creatista Pro: go to the Menu, select Descale, then follow the on-screen instructions.

Have your descaler, fresh water and a large container ready before you start. Then do what the screen asks at each stage, including the rinse.

How to descale the Creatista Uno: step by step

  1. Empty and clean. Open and close the capsule lever to remove any used capsule. Empty and clean the capsule bucket, drip tray and water tank, then put them back.
  2. Add water and descaler. Make sure there’s 500 ml of water in the tank and the drip tray is in place. Add the descaling agent to the water.
  3. Place the container. Put a 1 litre container under both the coffee outlet and the steam wand.
  4. Enter descaling mode. With the machine off, press and hold the Ristretto and Steam buttons together for 5 seconds. Both buttons stay lit. To leave without descaling, press any button that isn’t lit.
  5. Start descaling. Press Ristretto or Steam. Both buttons blink, and the milk froth level lights show the progress.
  6. Empty and rinse. When it’s finished, pour away the liquid in the container, then empty and rinse the water tank.
  7. Fill for the rinse. Fill the tank to MAX with drinking water.
  8. Run the first rinse. Put the empty container back under the outlet and wand, then press Ristretto or Steam.
  9. Run the second rinse. Empty the container and repeat steps 6 to 8. When the second rinse ends, the Ristretto and Steam buttons flash three times and the machine switches off.
  10. Finish. Rinse the drip tray and water tank and put them back.

If something goes wrong part-way

The manuals don’t describe how to recover from an interrupted descale. On the Plus and Pro, the troubleshooting table says that if a “Machine Error” message appears, there’s a major fault and you should contact Nespresso. If the Descale Now alert is still showing, go back into the Maintenance menu or Menu and run Descale again. On the Uno, if the descale light stays on, the machine won’t work until a full descale and rinse have been completed.

Tips to descale less often

  • Set the water hardness. Use the test strip that comes with the machine. On the Plus, it’s under SETTINGS. On the Pro, it’s in the Menu. On the Uno, hold the temperature and milk froth buttons for 5 seconds, then adjust.
  • Keep the steam wand clean. The Pro’s Menu has separate Clean Steam Wand and Rinse Steam Wand options. They’re not the same as descaling.

Downsides

  • The lockout can stop you mid-morning if you ignore the alert.
  • The manuals approve only Nespresso’s own descaler, and we couldn’t confirm its UK price.
  • The Plus manuals we found give two different lockout counts.
