How to descale a Philips 3200 (LatteGo) step by step
How to descale Philips 3200 machines, LatteGo or classic frother: when the light tells you, what to remove first, what the warning lights mean if it stalls, and how to set water hardness.

If you want to know how to descale Philips 3200 machines, here’s the short answer. Wait for the Calc/Clean light to flash slowly. Take off the LatteGo or milk frother, take the AquaClean filter out of the tank, add a whole bottle of Philips descaler and top up with water to the Calc/Clean mark. Then hold the Calc/Clean icon for 3 seconds and press start/stop. Philips says it takes about 30 minutes, including a 3-minute rinse. We haven’t tested this in person. This guide follows the Philips user manual that covers the 3200 Series (it’s shared with the 800, 1200 and 2200), with prices from Philips UK checked 3 Oct 2026. Read how we compare.
The 3200 runs the same cycle as the 2200, which our Philips 2200 descaling guide covers in more detail. Here we focus on what’s specific to the 3200: its milk systems, its warning lights and its hardness setting.
When a Philips 3200 asks to be descaled
There’s no fixed schedule. The 3200 tracks its water use against the hardness you’ve set, and when a descale is due, the Calc/Clean icon on the touch panel flashes slowly. Don’t put it off: Philips says failing to descale voids the warranty.
Two icons on the panel matter here:
- Calc/Clean starts the descale and flashes while it runs.
- AquaClean shows the filter status. It’s blue when a filter is active and flashes orange when the filter needs replacing.
Before you start, have these ready:
- Philips descaler (CA6700). £8.49 at Philips UK, checked 3 Oct 2026, but it was out of stock that day. Philips says it’s also sold through retailers and authorised service centres. See it at Philips UK.
- A container that holds at least 1.5 litres and fits under both the coffee spout and the hot water spout.
- A new AquaClean filter (CA6903) if you use one. £15.99 at Philips UK, checked 3 Oct 2026. See it at Philips UK.
- Half an hour when you won’t need the machine.
Philips rules out descalers based on sulfuric, hydrochloric, sulfamic or acetic acid (vinegar), saying they can damage the water circuit.
Who it isn’t for: owners of the 4300, 5400 or 5500. Those machines start descaling from a menu, so see our Philips 5400 descaling guide instead.
How to descale Philips 3200 machines: the cycle
Here are the manual’s steps, in our own words:
- Switch the machine on, then take off the milk system (more on that below).
- Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container, then put them back. If either is missing or not seated properly, the alarm light comes on and the cycle won’t run.
- Empty the water tank and take out the AquaClean filter.
- Pour in the whole bottle of descaler, top up with water to the Calc/Clean mark and put the tank back.
- Put the container under both spouts.
- Hold the Calc/Clean icon for 3 seconds, then press start/stop. The Calc/Clean light flashes during the descaling phase.
- Wait for the empty-tank warning. That’s the end of phase one, not a fault.
- Rinse the tank and refill it with fresh water to the Calc/Clean mark. Empty the container, put it back and press start/stop.
- Let the 3-minute rinse finish. The panel lights blink while it runs. Once the machine stops dispensing, it heats up, and it’s ready when the drink icons stay lit.
- Fit and activate a new AquaClean filter. The AquaClean light flashes for a while afterwards as a reminder.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who needs a coffee in the next 30 minutes. Once you start the cycle, let it run to the end.
LatteGo or classic frother: what to do with the milk system
The 3200 comes with one of two milk systems, depending on the model. Each needs handling a little differently around a descale.
LatteGo models (such as the EP3246/70). LatteGo clips onto the hot water spout, which is one of the spouts the descaler runs through, so it has to come off first. Philips says it has two parts and no tubes, so the descaler never passes through it. Rinse it as you normally would after each use: press the release button, separate the milk container from the frame and wash both parts under the tap with a little washing-up liquid, or put them in the dishwasher. When you reassemble it, hook the top of the container under the frame and press the bottom until it clicks. Philips says leaks from the bottom mean it isn’t clicked in.
Classic milk frother models. Take the frother off before you start, and it’s a good moment for the manual’s daily clean: let it cool, tilt it left, pull off the metal and silicone parts, rinse them and check the small hole in the metal tube isn’t blocked.
Who it isn’t for: anyone hoping descaling will fix poor milk froth. Philips puts that down to a dirty or badly assembled milk system, not to limescale.
Stuck mid-cycle? What the 3200’s lights mean
The 3200 signals problems through lights. These are the ones from the manual you’re most likely to see during a descale:
- Water tank empty light. If you see it partway through, it usually just means phase one has finished. Rinse, refill to the Calc/Clean mark and press start/stop.
- Alarm light on. The drip tray or grounds container isn’t seated properly, or the service door is open. Push them fully home.
- Alarm light on and start light flashing. Air is trapped in the system. On classic frother models, the manual’s fix is to fill the tank, put a cup under the frother and press the flashing start/stop button. Expect small jets of hot water. The manual doesn’t give the LatteGo version of this step, so if you have a LatteGo model, check Philips’ support pages first.
- Drink icon lights going on and off one by one. The machine is heating up or clearing air. Wait until they stay lit.
- All warning lights flashing. Unplug the machine and plug it back in. Before switching on, remove the AquaClean filter, push the tank fully in and check the pre-ground chute isn’t clogged. If the lights still flash, Philips says it may have overheated, so leave it off for 30 minutes. If that fails, contact Philips.
If you stopped the cycle with the on/off button, or it was interrupted, you’ll need to rinse the system and then descale again. Philips sets out the rinse steps in the manual, and we list them in our 2200 guide linked above. The machine will ask for a fresh descale soon afterwards.
Who it isn’t for: anyone whose lights keep flashing after a reset and a 30-minute rest. That’s a job for Philips Consumer Care or a repair.
How often to descale, and the hardness setting
How often you descale depends on two things: the hardness setting and whether you use AquaClean.
Water hardness. Philips sets the 3200 to 4 (hard water) by default, so if your water is softer, setting it properly means fewer descales. Test your water with the strip that comes with the machine. Then switch the machine off, hold the aroma strength icon until all its lights come on, and tap it to match the result:
| Test strip result | Hardness | Setting |
|---|---|---|
| 4 red dots | above 21 °dH | 4 |
| 3 red dots | above 14 °dH | 3 |
| 2 red dots | above 7 °dH | 2 |
| 1 red dot or 4 green dots | below 6 °dH | 1 |
Press start/stop to confirm. Changing this setting doesn’t affect the strength of your coffee.
AquaClean. Philips says each filter lasts up to 625 cups. Activating one switches off the descaling alarm until after eight filter changes, which Philips puts at up to 5,000 cups depending on how you use the machine. The machine must be limescale-free before you start using filters, so fit one straight after a descale. Replace the filter when the light flashes orange, or after three months at the latest. If you ignore the light until it goes out, you’ll need to descale before a new filter will activate. Philips also says Brita filters aren’t compatible with this machine.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who’d rather not buy filters. Skipping AquaClean is fine, but you’ll see the Calc/Clean light more often.

FAQ
How long does it take to descale a Philips 3200? Philips says about 30 minutes, including a 3-minute rinse.
Can you use vinegar to descale a Philips 3200? No. Philips says acetic acid (vinegar) can damage the water circuit, and it recommends its own descaler.
Does the descaler go through LatteGo? No. LatteGo comes off before you start, and Philips says it has no tubes. Just wash it as you normally would.
Why won’t a new AquaClean filter activate? Philips says this happens when the machine isn’t fully free of limescale, usually because the old filter wasn’t changed in time. Descale first, then activate the filter.
